Following the death of Daunte Wright, the civil unrest in the Minneapolis area drove three-in-season professional sports teams of the city to postpone their home games Monday.

The first Minnesota sports team to announce their canceled game was the Minnesota Twins against the Boston Red Sox. The baseball game was scheduled to start at around 1:10 p.m. CT. The cancellation was due to the safety of fans and players in the wake of a fatal police shooting in a nearby Minneapolis suburb on Sunday.

Afterward, the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA and NHL's Minnesota Wild followed suit and postponed their home game which was to start later on Monday evening.

According to USA Today, the Minnesota Twins shared that out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Brooklyn Center, the team have decided not to play today's game. The decision is in the best interest of their fans, staff, players, and the community.

Moreover, the decision was made by the Minnesota Twins after they consulted their decision with the Major League Baseball, local and state officials. The Minnesota Twins organization also extended their sympathies to the family of the victim, Daunte Wright.

In addition, the NHL and the Minnesota Wild each extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Daunte Wright during the announcement of their postponed game on Monday night. The game between the Wild and Blues has been rescheduled for May 12 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, The New York Times reported.

Meanwhile, earlier Monday, police released the body camera footage from the officer who fatally shot 20-year-old Wright at a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, just within eight miles from Target Field. The shooting incident prompted protests to gather in the city, mourning the death of Wright, but the police responded immediately to stabilize the situation.

The Twins and Red Sox were preparing for the game to be played before a joint decision was made by the league, state, and local officials, to postpone the game. Twins president and CEO Dave St. Peter shared that a huge part of this decision is safety. He mentioned that they had a consultation with the law enforcement regarding the unknowns that could transpire within the community in the following hours. That is why they pushed for the cancellation of the game.

Players Become Outspoken

The Minnesota Timberwolves also issued a similar statement, expressing sympathy for the family and friends of Daunte Wright. The basketball team stated that the tragic event left their community mourning. Timberwolves also had a consultation with the NBA and local officials regarding the cancellation of their game against the Brooklyn Nets is the best decision, CBS News reported.

Furthermore, the past year has been hard for the NBA as its players who have become increasingly outspoken witnessed systemic racism including police brutality. Last summer, despite being in the bubble, they exhibited protests in several forms after what happened in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where police officers shot Jacob Blake seven times.
