After fatally shooting a black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb, Kim Potter, the Minnesota police officer responsible for Daunte Wright's death, and the chief of police resigned on Tuesday.

Two days after the death of the 20-year-old black man in Brooklyn Center, Kim Potter and Police Chief Tim Gannon resigned in their positions. 

The 26-year veteran of the police force Kim Potter had been on administrative leave after the Sunday shooting incident. Minneapolis was already on edge over the trial of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin charged with murder for George Floyd's death last May.

According to ABC7, Kim Potter wrote in her one-paragraph resignation letter that she had loved every minute of being a police officer and serving the community to the best of her ability. But she added that she believes that her immediate resignation is for the best interest of the community, the police department, and her fellow police officers.

Mike Elliott, the Brooklyn Center Mayor, stated that he was appreciative that Potter submitted her resignation but cleared that he had not asked for it. 

The mayor noted that he was unsure if Potter did it because she had heard about the possible termination. He added that he hopes that the resignation would calm and heal the community after consecutive nights of unrest and protest in the city.

Elliott also stated that he would keep working towards "full accountability under the law," and they will continue working to make sure that justice will be served and done. 

He emphasized that Daunte Wright and his family deserve justice. The mayor also said that the new police leadership is committed to working with community leaders and protesters who noted that Daunte Wright was racially profiled.

Kim Potter Mistook Her Own Gun for Taser

Tim Gannon earlier said that he believes that Kim Potter mistakenly grabbed her gun when reaching for her Taser. Potter can be heard on bodycam footage shouting, "Taser! Taser!" 

Daunte Wright was shot as police were trying to arrest him due to an outstanding warrant, The New York Times reported. The father of the victim, Aubrey Wright, rejected Kim Potter's explanation and the chief that she mistook her gun for her Taser.

He emphasized that he lost his son and will never come back, so he cannot accept that it is just a mistake. He also pointed out that it is not acceptable as the police officer has been on the police force for 26 years.

Kim Potter's Home Address Revealed

After her address was posted on social media, Kim Potter reportedly fled her home. The officer, who resigned from her position in the police force, immediately vacated her home for her and her family's security, Independent reported.

The police officer left her home as the unrest continues. On Monday night, the protest action prompted police to fire tear gas at protesters gathered outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department in reaction to Daunte Wright's death. About 40 people were reportedly arrested at Monday night's protest.
