Stepsister of FedEx Gunman, Who Killed 8 in Indianapolis, Says He's 'Isolated'
A gunman opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis on Thursday night, leading to the deaths of eight employees. Police said that the 19-year-old gunman has also killed himself at the scene.
Four others who were shot and another injured person were taken to hospitals. Authorities said that no law enforcement officials were hurt in the shooting that a former employee carried out.
The former employee, identified as Brandon Scott Hole, worked at the said FedEx facility in the fall of 2020, police said. Brandon Scott Hole's motive for the shooting was not clear yet. However, the suspect's mother told police a year ago that she feared that her son might be suicidal.
"In March 2020, the suspect's mother contacted law enforcement to report he might try to 'attempt' suicide by cop," FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Keenan, who runs the bureau's Indianapolis field office, said as reported by NBC News.
A statement released by officials noted that a shotgun was seized at the suspect's residence, and the FBI interviewed him in April 2020.
The statement noted that "no racially motivated violent extremism" ideology was identified during the assessment, and no criminal violation was found. But the shotgun was not returned to the suspect.
In an interview with NewsNation affiliate WXIN-TV, Hole's stepsister described him as "isolated." She said they do have a lot of mental illness in the family, and the suspect never got the help he needed. She shared that their father died by suicide in 2004.

The FedEx Shooting Incident
Police responded to a report of shots fired at the FedEx Ground-Plainfield Operations Center near Indianapolis International Airport at the city's southwest side past 11 p.m.
When police arrived, IMPD Deputy Chief of Investigations Craig McCartt said cops found that eight people had been killed and several more were injured in the mass shooting.
McCartt said officers, who responded, arrived to a "chaotic and active" crime scene.
Police found Brandon Scott Hole dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside the facility. Authorities believed that the suspect died by suicide shortly before the police arrived, Indy Star reported.
According to McCartt, the shooter arrived at the facility and started randomly firing in the parking lot. He then went inside the facility and continued shooting, resulting in the deaths of four people inside the FedEx facility and four people outside.
During the time of the shooting, at least 100 people were inside the FedEx facility. Police released the names of those who died. They are Amarjeet Kaur Johal, 66; Karli Smith, 19; Matthew R. Alexander, 32; Samaria Blackwell, 19; Jaswinder Kaur, 64; Jaswinder Singh, 68; Amarjit Sekhon, 48; and John Weisert, 74.
Police said a rifle was involved in the incident. However, they did not specify the model. After the shooting incident, FedEx said it would reevaluate the policy requiring employees not to have phones with them during shifts.
Business Insider reported that FedEx employees do not have their phones with them while they are working. With employees having no cellphones at the time of the shooting, authorities told the workers' relatives to gather at a nearby Holiday Inn to wait for further instruction.
"Our focus at this time is on the safety and well-being of our team members and cooperating with investigators," Heather Wilson, a communications advisor with FedEx, said in the report.
Meanwhile, a statistic report showed that at least 37 innocent people have died in a mass shooting at the beginning of March, New York Post reported.
On Apr. 7, former NFL player Phillip Adams had shot six people, including a well-known doctor and his two grandchildren. The shooting took place in South Carolina.
