After an hours-long standoff, officials confirmed that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents shot a man who tried to drive into Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) headquarters in Langley, Virginia on Monday.

Two law enforcement officials said the intruder tried to drive into the CIA facility without having any access at around 6 p.m. ET. He was immediately stopped by armed guards who operate a series of gates.

CIA security officers tried to negotiate with the man, but he repeatedly refused to move and follow the officers' orders. They then decided to try to push the car out of the way.

Later on, the man got out of his car and brandished a gun before being shot by FBI agents. One of the officials noted that the man claimed to have explosives with him. But officials of the law enforcement have not yet mentioned if he actually possessed any explosives.

According to NBC News, two officials noted that the man who tried to drive into the CIA headquarters is mentally disturbed. Both also said that the man repeatedly tried in the past to get into the CIA campus.

The man, whose identity has yet to be released, was transported to a hospital. The extent of the injuries acquired by the man was also not disclosed to the public.

In a statement, the bureau emphasized that they are taking all shooting incidents which involve their agents or members of the task force seriously. The FBI also mentioned that the review process is thorough, objective, and conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances, Business Insider reported.

The spokeswoman of the CIA also stated earlier that they were trying to address a security situation outside the secure perimeter of CIA headquarters by their main gate. 

She added that their compound remains secured, and their Security Protective Officers working on the incident are the only agency personnel directly involved, The New York Times reported.

Furthermore, the reporter from WRC-TV, the news outlet NBC News in Washington, D.C., observed a significant amount of police activity around the security gates to the headquarters complex in Virginia suburb close to Washington. The buildings themselves are set far back from the gates.

History at CIA Headquarters

Meanwhile, security around the CIA is being taken seriously by the bureau because of an incident in 1993. In that year, a Pakistani national killed two employees of the CIA in their cars. While waiting at a stoplight close to the main entrance, three other individuals were also shot and left wounded.

The man responsible for the 1993 shooting incident, Mir Aimal Kasi, also known as Mir Aimal Kansi, fled to Afghanistan and was at large for four years before he was arrested, returned to the United States, and convicted. Kasi or Kansi was executed in 2002.

In April, a police officer at the U.S. Capitol was killed, and another was hurt after a suspect rammed into a barrier.
