An alleged Capitol rioter from Colorado is now facing house arrest after shooting a mountain lion. Identified as Patrick Montgomery, New York Post reported that the Capitol rioter faced a possible house arrest because he was not supposed to have a gun in the first place.

Patrick Montgomery has received a 10-count indictment for his role in the Capitol riot last January 6. Authorities then released him on the condition that banned him from owning a gun.

When Was the Mountain Lion Shot?

CBS Local reported that court documents showed that Patrick Montgomery, 48, shot a mountain lion at a Denver park in Colorado on March 31. 

The Washington Post noted that Montgomery allegedly posed with the 170-pound cat with his arms wrapped around the corpse after shooting the animal. The Capitol rioter reportedly used a handgun to kill the animal.

Montgomery followed the state's rules in harvesting mountain lions, such as getting permits and reporting the kill for officials to inspect.

However, the Colorado man violated the state law when he allegedly pursued a bobcat on January 25 for more than 11 miles with his hunting dogs. Washington Post underscored that the state does not permit using a slingshot or dogs to kill a "furbearer."

The Consequences that the Capitol Rioter Faces After Shooting the Mountain Lion

Patrick Montgomery violated the condition of his pre-trial release on February 2, as he used a handgun to shoot the mountain lion. 

Because of this, the federal prosecutors have filed a motion to revoke his pretrial release and asked the judge to place him under house arrest with a GPS monitor. Aside from the house arrest, the Colorado man can also face new state charges.

"Montgomery has flagrantly violated the law and has shown by his actions that he is unlikely to abide by Court order," the prosecutors said in the motion filed against the Capitol rioter. The government was notified on May 6 that Montgomery was in possession of an illegal firearm, specifically "a .357" magnum handgun, on March 31.

Capitol Rioter and His Records

Apart from being banned from owning any firearm, Patrick Montgomery was reported to be previously convicted for three counts of robbery in New Mexico in 1996.  New York Post reported that during that time, the Colorado man spent six years behind bars. 

When asked by the Colorado Parks and Wildfire about his robbery charge, Montgomery claimed that he was allowed to carry firearms for hunting purposes. However, officials could not find any provision in the court documents that allowed him to carry firearms.

Apart from the recent mountain lion that he killed, officials from Colorado underscored that the Capitol rioter was a "prolific hunter" who claimed to trap at least 100 mountain lions in the past five years, including 20 in the last hunting season.
