Jasmine Hartin, the daughter-in-law of British billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft, was arrested and set to be charged "tomorrow" for the death of a leading Belize cop.

Jasmine Hartin, who is married to Ashcroft's son Andrew, has been in custody since early Friday morning after Superintendent Henry Jemmott was found floating dead in the water off San Pedro island, Daily Mail reported.

The two were reportedly drinking and socializing on a pier before Jemmott was shot behind his right ear, apparently with his own service weapon. The Belize cop was a father of five.

Local news reports said that Jasmine Hartin had told detectives that she was giving the Belize cop a message before the shooting incident. Jemmott and Hartin were said to be playing around with the weapon before the shooting took place.

The Belize cop's sister, Marie Jemmott Tzul, told the Daily Mail that Hartin was about to be charged and is set to make her first court appearance within days.

The Central American nation's Police Commissioner Chester Williams said that the daughter-in-law of British billionaire Lord Michael Ashcroft did not want to cooperate with authorities at first. Instead, she insisted on waiting for her lawyer to be present, Sky News reported.

Police noted that the incident appeared to be not an attack as the two were friends and had been drinking at the time. Williams said that investigators believe the two had been alone on the pier but were both fully clothed.

He added that the socialite had "what appeared to be blood on her arms and on her clothing" when she was found on a dock near where the Belize cop's body was discovered.

LinkedIn accounts suggest that both Andrew Ashcroft and Jasmine Hartin were connected with a local resort in Belize, the Independent reported.

Jasmine Hartin and Henry Jemmott

According to another Independent report, Jasmine Hartin is a Director of Lifestyle & Experience at the newly opened Alaia Belize Resort.

Its developer is Andrew Ashcroft, which the Marriott resort's website described him as a citizen with links to the country going back "generations." The said website entry was deleted as of Saturday morning.

In May, Jemmott had been transferred to Belize City to command a precinct and had recently requested a time off to deal with personal issues, police said.

According to a Breaking Belize News report, Lord Michael Ashcroft recently donated "much-needed" equipment to the Belize Athletics Association. The donation, made in early May, was said to enable its athletes to host better national events and even regional tournaments in the future.

Belize Athletics Association (BAA) President Dean Sutherland JP said it would significantly improve their efforts to help their athletes.

The BAA added that Ashcroft would be sponsoring coaches' accreditation program, while BAA will soon be implementing the said program for the benefit of the athletes and the sport.

Lord Michael Ashcroft said he was providing the sponsorship as he admires the BAA's ongoing work and its ambitious projects in the future.

According to Forbes, the British billionaire had gained his fortune from buying and selling a number of companies, including home security giant ADT. He previously served as the Belizean Ambassador to the United Nations from 1998 to 2000.
