Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro Requests a Faster COVID Vaccine Delivery on Pfizer

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro Asks Pfizer to Speed Up the Vaccine Delivery
The outraged Brazilian protesters seemed to be heard by their government as Jair Bolsonaro talked with the Pfizer executives, addressing his requests.
Along with his chief of staff and ministers, Bolsonaro held a conference call with Pfizer Brasil Chief Executive Marta Diez and Pfizer Latin America Chief Executive Carlos Murrillo. The Brazilian president asked them for a possibility of deliveries intended later this year be moved to June, a government source confirmed with Reuters.
In March, the Brazilian government signed a deal with the pharmaceutical giant to purchase 100 million doses. The first doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccines arrived in the country in late April. A second contract with Pfizer in May will provide another 100 million doses expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of the year.
Despite the president's effort, it was not clear whether the executives agreed with President Bolsonaro's requests. According to a testimony to a Senate committee, the request from the Brazilian president is a change for Bolsonaro, who ignored Pfizer's COVID vaccines offer.
As of June 10, the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded more than 71 million vaccine doses administered by Brazil. Furthermore, about 50 million people were vaccinated with at least one dose of the COVID vaccine in the country.
Brazil Extends Johnson and Johnson COVID Vaccine Validity
President Jair Bolsonaro's request with the Pfizer executives also comes as Janssen reportedly suspended the shipment of 3 million Johnson and Johnson COVID Vaccines to Brazil, which was expected to arrive in the country on June 15, according to The Brazilian Report. The outlet furthered that the Health Ministry of the country confirmed the report, but they did not explain the reason behind the suspension.
In response, Brazil's health regulator, Anvisa, extended the validity of Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccines to 4 and a half months, giving their country more time to use a first batch that is due to arrive this week.
Brazil's extension of the expiration reflects the movement of the U.S. FDA, extending the expiration date of the three million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine from the original timeframe of three months.
The WHO recorded more than 78,000 new COVID cases and more than 2,000 deaths in Brazil in the last 24 hours.
