Gunmen Steal 7 Million Rounds of Ammo in Central Mexico; Mexican Guards Reclaim 5 Million Bullets From U.S.-Bound Trucks
After a shipment of bullets was stolen in Central Mexico. Mexican authorities confirmed that they recovered 5 million out of 7 million rounds of stolen ammunition.
Stolen Ammo Recovery
The said hijacked United States-bound trucks contained a total of 7 million mixed ammunitions on June 9.
According to CDL life, Mexico's National Guard also known as GN or Guardia Nacional reported on Friday that around 5 million bullets were found in the Mexican municipality of San Luis de La Paz in the state of Guanajuato. The area is located about 19 miles from where the bullets were stolen.
GN agents posted on social media that they have located a dry box-type trailer that is similar to the one reported. The trailer was about to collapse loaded with various boxes of useful cartridges. Based on the initial information, the shipments found is linked to the two trailers loaded with stolen weapons from Guanajuato in Central Mexico.
Days before the discovery, more than 7 million rounds of small-caliber ammunition bound for the U.S. were reportedly stolen from two trucks headed to Texas. The said trucks were hijacked by armed assailants on a highway close to the town of La Cabaña del Rey.
Based on authorities, both the drivers of the trucks alongside escort units who were guarding the shipment were reportedly threatened at gunpoint. The report mentioned that the thieves have removed the trailers from the tractors and towed them away in other units. But the truck drivers and the assisting personnel were not harmed during the incident.
Moreover, Mexican authorities mentioned that the shipment was mostly .22 caliber and .38 caliber bullets. The said bullets were often used in rifles for target practice or small game hunting. But a significant portion of the bullets was for high-powered weapons, including AR-15 and M-16 rifles.

Meanwhile, the said ammunition is made in the Aguilas Ammunition factory in the city of Cuernavaca, which is 57 miles south of Mexico City. Aguila Ammunition is a company that has been exporting to the U.S. since the 1960s.
According to the latest data from the National Public Security System, an agency that monitors crime in Mexico. In the state of Guanajuato, 12 cargo thefts were recorded in the month of April while authorities recorded 71 incidents through the first four months of 2021. Also, Guanajuato state recorded 1,623 cargo thefts during 2020, Freightwaves reported.
The Guanajuato's town, San Luis de la Paz where the robbery took place, has been embroiled in a bloody war, most of the incidents were between Mexico's most powerful criminal groups, the CJNG, Jalisco Cartel New Generation, or the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.
The governor of Guanajuato also claimed in 2019 that the Gulf Cartel or Clan del Golfo, which is a powerful criminal syndicate based in northern Mexico, also made their presence felt in the town of San Luis de la Paz. But so far, none of the mentioned groups has claimed responsibility for the robbery, Business Insider reported.
