World Cup 2014 Schedule, Groups, Preview, Where to Watch: Netherlands to Face Australia in Group B Showdown
The Netherlands will look to book a spot in the knockout stages, while Australia will fight for survival when they collide on Wednesday at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
The Netherlands opened their 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign with a scintillating 5-1 win against defending champions Spain on Friday, while Australia started on the wrong foot, losing to Chile, 3-1, in their tournament opener.
A win for Netherlands will virtually give them a spot in the next round, and they are expected to go all out as they are also aiming for the top spot in Group B in hopes of avoiding a Round-of-16 showdown against host Brazil.
The Dutch squad, who were the runners-up in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, will once again rely on their deadly attacking duo of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, who both scored two goals against Spain.
Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal had all praises for his squad during their win against the Spanish side, but he insisted that it won't have any importance if they will not perform well against Australia.
"I did not expect that it would go this way, it could have been 6-1 or even more, and we had a very happy feeling," van Gaal said on Friday via Yahoo! Sports UK. "This is a nice start but we have nothing. If we do not win our next game against Australia we have made no progress, but now we are obviously in a good position."
The Socceroos will be a heavy underdog heading into their showdown, but Australia coach Ange Postecoglou, who got a goal from veteran Tim Cahill during their opener, is still hoping that his squad can pull of an upset, saying that the pressure will be on their favored opponents.
"Our players are looking forward to it, we want to measure ourselves against the best," Postecoglou said of their match against Netherlands. "If they win against us, they're through. They'll be very determined to do that, but with that comes some pressure as well. Who knows, maybe we'll be able to upset all the logic and all the odds."
The Netherlands-Australia match will start at 12 p.m. EST. Fans can watch this Group B match on ESPN and through WatchESPN online streaming.
