The PA Supreme Court overturned the assault conviction on "America's Dad" Bill Cosby after serving two years in prison.

What Changed Their Minds?

Just this Wednesday, June 30, Pennsylvania's highest court overturned Cosby's sexual assault conviction after seeking an agreement from the previous prosecutor that prevented the 83-year old former actor from being charged in the case.

Cosby was placed in a state prison near Philadelphia, serving a supposed 10-year sentence saying that he vowed to serve the entirety of the sentence rather than admit what happened over the unfortunate time with Andrea Constand in 2004.

The Details of the Previous Trial

Cosby was accused of both drugging and molesting women, and the one to speak out first was Ms. Constand. Cosby was sentenced in late 2015 when a prosecutor had acquired newly unsealed evidence regarding Cosby's deposition from Constand's lawsuit. He was arrested right before the 12-year statute of limitation almost expired.

The trial's judge permitted only one accuser to testify against Cosby, which made the jury dead even on indecision. However, he allowed another five accusers to recount their own instances with Cosby in the 80s. Cosby was the first celebrity who was tried and then summarily convicted of his alleged crimes in the #MeToo era.

One of Cosby's lawyers during the case said that prosecutors gave vague evidence regarding the uncharged conduct. He also used Cosby's own recollection in his deposition regarding giving women alcohol and quaaludes before sexually assaulting them. 

PA Supreme Court's Thoughts

PA Supreme Court has said that the move to add more accusers "tainted the trial" regardless of the lower appeals court deemed it necessary to create a specific pattern of drugging than molesting women right after.

Prosecutors have not yet made any moves if they would try to go after Cosby a third time over as several justices are now concerned regarding other things like the judiciary's increasing inclination to give more than one testimony that can cross the line. Character attacks are what it's called, and the law is supposed to allow testimonials for limited cases.

Cosby was denied parole in May since he refused to attend sex offender programs and would go on saying that he will adamantly resist any wrongful accusations of him even going so far as to serve the entire decade sentence. 

Prosecutors Had This to Say

Cosby used his persona and fame to lure and manipulate young women acting out as their mentor and then betraying them right after. As per Constand's case, she said that Cosby invited her over one night at his estate and then drugged and sexually assaulted her.

Constand is a former professional basketball player who worked in Cosby's alma mater and came forward to the police a year after the incident. As for the other accusers said they met him through the same entertainment industry and did not approach the police.
