Parents and students have demanded a California school to fire a Spanish teacher who used the n-word twice in her class and argued that the racial slur was "used to be a horrible ugly word and it's not anymore."

The call of the parents and students to fire Spanish teacher Katherine Sanders came as an audio recording of her surfaced. 

Daily Mail reported that the recording dated back to June 15. Katherine Sanders, who is white, teaches seventh-grade Spanish at Kit Carson International Academy in Sacramento, California.

In the recording, California News-Times reported that Katherine Sanders was heard saying that it was alright to say racial slurs because she "always" hear them in their area.

The Spanish teacher also reportedly compared the n-word to the f-word in a language discussion lesson on the same day the seniors graduated from school.

"I know the f-word is something we hear constantly. It used to be nasty, ugly word and now it's like the word [n-word] which everybody says," Sanders said in the recording. She added that the n-word "used to be a horrible ugly word and "it's not anymore somehow."

Parents and students in the said California school as well as group leaders such as Berry Accius, a community activist and founder of Voice of the Youth, called for the Spanish teacher's immediate removal.

They said an apology was not enough at a briefing on July 1 attended by the superintendent of schools in Sacramento, California, Jorge Aguilar.  

"This was a history of bad language, ignorance and racism here by this teacher," Accius noted.

"What happened to all those so-called 'implicit bias trainings' and 'anti-racism trainings' that these schools are supposedly having these teachers go through every year?" Accius added.

Meanwhile, Aguilar addressed the issue in the event, saying that what happened at Kit Carson will not be "condoned" and tolerated. 

Aguilar noted that Katherine Sanders is no longer working with the students, but did not confirm if the Spanish teacher was fired.

California Student Says It's not Katherine Sander's First Time to Use Racial Slurs

A California student confirmed that this was not the first time that the Spanish teacher uses racial slurs or derogatory terms. 

Monica Sandoval told The Sacramento Bee that the Spanish teacher also used offensive terms to describe Latino students and attempted to justify the racial comment by saying that everyone says it.

Sandoval noted that students like her would always be sent to detention every time they would try to tell the Spanish teacher that it seems not right.

"We would try telling her [Sanders] and she would get mad and send us to detention," Sandoval said.

California School District Board Comments on the Issue

After the incident was brought up, the Sacramento City Unified School Board said that they were "horrified" that a teacher from their district used racial slurs in the classroom.

"Our Board condemns racism and the use of racist language in strongest terms. Racism, racist behaviors, and racist language are unacceptable, and will not be tolerated in the Sacramento City Unified School District," the school district board said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Aguilar wrote an email to the parents and students, saying that the use of racial slurs by the Spanish teacher do not reflect the views and position of their district. Aguilar further noted that their district would further investigate the matter.
