The final moments of a California man have been recorded on video by friends who watched him jumped from a bridge in Shasta County.

The Mercury News reported that the man from Reno, Nevada jumped off the Lake Britton Bridge off Highway 89 north of Burney on Wednesday afternoon and did not resurface.

A search began after the man's girlfriend contacted authorities at 4:13 p.m., saying he had not resurfaced from a possible drowning. 

Reports said the California man, whose name and age have not been released, has been under the water for more than 30 minutes by the time the Shasta County sheriff's deputies arrived.

"The video showed that the victim jumped off a bridge and attempt a flipping maneuver before landing awkwardly in the water," said the sheriff's office.

It was not clear whether the girlfriend was the one who recorded the video of the man jumping. The highway bridge, where the man jumped off, is about 75 feet above the lake.

Authorities Say California Man an Experienced Jumper

Record Searchlight reported that when the authorities arrived at the scene, they could not find the California man along the shoreline or on the water.

A dive team from the sheriff's office was called to search under the bridge in the dark, muddy water. A California Highway Patrol helicopter was also brought in for aerial surveillance.

Authorities said the California man, an experienced cliff and bridge jumper, was discovered by the dive team in 37 feet of water around 7:45 p.m. the same day, NEWS4 reported.

His body was turned over to the Shasta County Coroner's Office. Authorities said the name of the California man would be released after his family was notified.

California's Lake Britton

The bridge, where the California man jumped off, is a quarter-mile downstream from the railroad bridge made famous in the 1986 movie "Stand by Me."

Lake Britton is located within McArthur-Burney Falls State Park, a famous camping destination. Different activities such as fishing, swimming, and boating can be done in the area. 

The California man was not the first individual who died in Lake Britton that draws many summer visitors. Mercury News reported that a 30-year-old man from Orange County died after jumping from nearby Burney Falls three years ago. 

The Burney Falls, a 130-foot waterfall, is the centerpiece of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.
