A grandson was arrested after he had stabbed his grandmother to death while also seriously injuring his mother and shooting three people while trying to steal their vehicles in Louisiana.

The 28-year-old suspect, Aaron Morgan, was shot twice when he tried to flee on foot. He had abandoned the vehicle he stole, Crime Online reported.

According to East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputies, the Louisiana man has suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was set to be charged with his 78-year-old grandmother's murder.

The suspect's grandmother was identified as Dianne Gafford. Aaron Morgan will also face other charges aside from the murder once he is released from the hospital.

The Louisiana Crime Spree Involving the Grandson

Aaron Morgan was accused of stabbing his grandmother and unnamed mother inside a home in Baton Rouge on Sunday. The mother survived.

After the stabbing, he fled using his grandmother's car. The grandson reportedly shot three people outside an upscale shopping center off Highland Road as he tried to steal multiple vehicles, WAFB reported.

He dumped his grandmother's car after he found a vehicle running with the keys inside. He then led police on a chase near the corner of Jefferson Highway. The Louisiana man had also attempted to carjack someone else after he exited the vehicle.

Aaron Morgan then jumped to a nearby fence and pointed a gun at police, according to authorities. Police then shot him twice. The Louisiana man was wounded and transported to a nearby hospital. 

Aaron Morgan had prior traffic infractions based on his criminal record in East Baton Rouge parish. In 2012, the Louisiana man was in a motorcycle wreck that had broken every bone in his face, WBRZ reported. The accident had changed his appearance as a result.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said in a statement that there's no longer an active threat to their community and thanked the first responders and public safety agencies.

Broome had also encouraged everyone to pray for those recovering from their injuries. She also thanked the good Samaritans who rushed in moments after the incident to provide aid. Dianne Gafford was about to celebrate her 79th birthday on Thursday.

Louisiana Murder Rate

Louisiana has been reported to have the highest murder rate across the nation for 31 years, The New York Times reported.

Many factors that could provide insight into the state's ranking include disproportionate racial segregation, poverty, and job discrimination. The said factors had turned minorities toward the underground community and economy.

Louisiana and Mississippi had also tended to rank among the poorest states in the United States. The former ranked in the bottom five in the poverty rate in 37 of the last 40 years.

Mississippi had a higher share of its population below the poverty line in 2019. The Bureau of Justice Statistics noted that Louisiana has the highest or second-highest incarceration rate in each of the last 19 years.

Louisiana was even dubbed the "world prison capital" in a 2012 article in the Times-Picayune. Chief executive of the Foundation for Louisiana, Flozell Daniels, noted that when people are exposed to violent environments, it is much more likely they will adopt violent practices to survive.

The use of guns was also a factor, with 84 percent of murders in Louisiana, used a firearm as a weapon.
