VP Kamala Harris to Talk With Mexico's President Over COVID Vaccines
Vice President Kamala Harris would engage in talks with the President of Mexico, tackling COVID-19 vaccines concerns.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced during a speech on Sunday that he would talk with Kamala Harris over the phone on Monday, as the cases for the notorious disease continue to surge in both countries.
López Obrador said that the meeting on Monday will also be about the "joint agenda collaboration" between the U.S. and Mexico.
VP Kamala Harris Will talk About COVID Vaccine With the Mexican President
Despite announcing the main agenda of what the two officials will be tackling over the phone, The president of Mexico did not further on the other subjects they will talk about.
Speaking in front of a new national guard installation in the northern city of Ciudad Juarez, López Obrador said that there are "commitments" for Mexico to have more vaccines that the United States would provide.
It can be recalled that it was not the first time Harris would talk with the Mexican president. In early June, the vice president visited Mexico and met López Obrador as she sought cooperation with the country about the migration in Central America and border security. The two officials also tackled COVID-19 vaccine sharing, marking Harris' first overseas trip as the vice president of the U.S.
At the beginning of her meeting with López Obrador, Harris said that the partnership between their countries "embarks" a new era that would establish "clear interdependence and interconnection between nations." "
In March, President Joe Biden tapped Harris to lead the efforts in collaborating with Mexico as well as the northern triangle countries to stem and address the migration in the southern border. Harris was also expected to address the long-term partnership between the said countries.
The Hill reported that López Obrador's comments suggested that Mexico would receive more vaccine doses from the United States.
A fact sheet from the White House revealed that Mexico received at least 4,049,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses from the United States.
"Our goals are to increase the global COVID-19 vaccination coverage, prepare for surges, and prioritize healthcare workers and other vulnerable populations," the White House fact sheet reads. The White House furthered that they would continue to work with COVAX, regional partners like African Union, and CARICOM to make sure that the doses would be delivered equitably.
The Mexican president expressed gratitude for the said vaccine doses donated by the U.S. Furthermore, López Obrador also lauded the U.S. Mexico relations under the Biden administration.
COVID-19 Cases in Mexico
The phone call between President López Obrador and Vice President Kamala Harris came as Mexico faces a surge in OCVID-19 cases. On Friday, The World Health organization recorded at least 20,685 confirmed cases of the virus. Meanwhile at over 242,000 Mexican died due to the notorious disease.
Meanwhile, at least 21 percent of the population of Mexico was reported to be fully vaccinated, The Hill reported citing data from John Hopkins University.
