Chelsea Handler New Talk Show: Chelsea Lately Host Signs Seven-Year Contract With Netflix
Chelsea Handler may be synonymous with the E! channel, but the comedian has decided to move on.
Handler told Howard Stern earlier in the year that she was not happy with E! Her contract expires in December, and she told him she was interested in working with Netflix. It was rumored that she signed a contract in April, but it wasn't until Thursday that Netflix confirmed the news, according to USA Today.
"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler said in a statement. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch, so I approached Netflix to make sure they were. And when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I'm more excited than I've been in a while, and the team at Netflix is the most forward-thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the 'Shahs of Sunset.'"
To kick things off, Handler will have a stand-up comedy special based on her current tour "Uganda Be Kidding me." It will be recorded in Chicago this week, and it will be released on Netflix on Oct. 10.
There will also be four "docu-comedy specials" that will air throughout 2015. These will be "featuring her efforts to gain a better understanding of a variety of subjects ranging from NASCAR to politics and from Silicon Valley to the NBA draft," Netflix said.
And finally, in 2016, her talk show will return with an updated format.
Handler will give her opinions on entertainment and cultural issues, and she will also hold interviews with celebrities. There's no word yet about how often the show will air, or how Netflix will deal with a talk show, which unlike their other shows, is very linked to topical events.
