Red Rocks Ampitheatre Shooting: 3 Injured at Rap Concert; Suspect Remains at Large
Three people were shot and injured injured after a rap concert at the Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado. Police are still searching for the suspect.
It appears the shooter targeted the occupants of a white SUV in the parking lot outside of the concert. That vehicle fled the scene and was later stopped by police.
The three victims were transported to the hospital according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's office. Their condition is unknown at this moment.
Police officers don't have much to work with in their search to find the shooter, only a vague description, but they believe this wasn't a random shooting.
"We do not believe this is a random shooting into a crowd," Jefferson County Sheriff spokesman Mark Techmeyer said. "We don't know what the motive would have been for the shooter, or what the connection is with the victims."
Miles from the concert, police located the SUV and pulled it over for speeding. The driver said they didn't want to wait for treatment to arrive and were rushing to the hospital on their own.
"This initially came out as a chase, as a pursuit," said Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley. "It wasn't until Denver police got this vehicle stopped that they realized it was headed to the hospital. They were headed into town and didn't want to wait for medical."
When concert officials heard about the shooting, they shut the gates and prevented any vehicles from exiting. They interviewed each car and searched for hours for information. The victims' SUV left before the gates were shut.
Kelley said that a tipline is receiving "hundreds" of calls and they are reviewing the tips received.
Thursday's rap concert featured Nas, Schoolboy Q and Flying Lotus. Another concert featuring Skillrex is scheduled for Friday but investigators are still on the scene.
One man was seen in handcuffs speaking to police. The SUV is said to be a hired limosuine. The vehicle's windshield had significant damage.
Red Rocks Ampitheatre is located near Morrison, Colorado, about 15 miles west of Denver. It is a rock structure concert venue that is owned and operated by the city and county of Denver.
