Pres. Joe Biden Calls out NFL for Lack of Black Head Coaches in Super Bowl Interview
President Joe Biden has called out the National Football League (NFL) for the number of black head coaches in its league. Biden said the NFL had not kept its promises about hiring more minorities to run teams.
Biden aired his comments in an NBC News interview airing Super Bowl Sunday, wherein he talked about the NFL's commitments to diversifying leadership in the league, New York Post reported.
The president said the NFL is made up of so many athletes of color, but there are not enough African American qualified coaches to manage the said NFL teams.
He noted that it seems to him that it is a standard that the league would want to live up to, adding that it was not a requirement of law but rather of some "generic decency." Seventy-one percent of its players are non-white in NFL, while nearly all of its head coaches are white.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged earlier that the league had fallen "short" in its goals of hiring more head coaches of color. Goodell added that the NFL is not doing a good enough job in its efforts.
Joe Biden on Black Head Coaches in the NFL
NFL has long been under scrutiny for its hiring process in its coaching roles, with only three people of color having head coaching jobs in the league. White men mainly held the position, NBC News reported.
NBC News anchor Lester Holt asked the president whether the NFL should be held to a higher standard when it comes to diversity issues. Joe Biden answered that he thinks it should be "held to a reasonable standard."
Goodell said in a press conference that the league would not tolerate racism or discrimination. The NFL commissioner noted that he found all allegations very disturbing, whether they were based on racism or discrimination or the integrity of their game.
Goodell said they are "very serious matters" on all levels, adding that they need to make sure they get to the bottom of all of it.
Brian Flores Lawsuit
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL earlier in February, alleging racial discrimination in the league's hiring process.
The Dolphins fired the former Black head coach in January despite earning a second straight winning season for the first time since 2003.
Flores also alleged that he was offered bonuses to lose games in order to secure higher picks in the NFL draft. However, the Dolphins deny Flores' claims, The Guardian reported.
The former Miami Dolphins head coach also claimed in his lawsuit that the NFL is racially segregated, adding that it "managed much like a plantation."
Meanwhile, Flores will reportedly add another claim in his lawsuit against NFL. He would amend the lawsuit to add a retaliation claim against the Texans.
Flores was one of the reported finalists for the Texans' head coaching role. However, he filed the lawsuit against the NFL while the interview process with the Texans was ongoing, New York Post reported.
The Texans ultimately hired Lovie Smith, a veteran black coach who had served as Houston's defensive coordinator last season. Texans GM Nick Caserio maintained that Flores' pending lawsuit did not affect his chances of getting the job.
