One Sacramento mass shooting suspect was arrested on Monday after the incident left six people dead and 12 others injured over the weekend. More arrests are likely to come, according to police.

The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Dandrae Martin, who was taken into custody in connection with the shooting and is currently facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and illegal firearms possession, according to a USA Today News report.

Sacramento police said that more than 100 rounds were fired early Sunday outside the city's entertainment district.

Martin was described by the police as "a related suspect." Police added that detectives and SWAT team members found one handgun during searches of three homes in the area.

Sacramento Mass Shooting

Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said that it is not known whether the alleged gunmen knew each other, adding that a large crowd was present at the time of the shooting, according to an ABC News report.

The victims were later identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's office on Monday as Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21; and Devazia Turner, 29.

Meanwhile, the conditions of the injured victims were not immediately known, according to police.

The police were patrolling the area at about 2 a.m. Lester said that they arrived at the scene and found a crowd gathered on the street with six people dead.

Lester said during the press conference that they know that a large fight took place just before the shooting, and they have confirmed that there were multiple shooters.

Sgt Zach Eaton, a police department spokesperson, said investigators believe there were at least two shooters, according to The Guardian report.

Detectives were trying to determine the events leading to the shooting. Eaton said that they do not know if that fight actually caused the shooting.

Lester said the case is "a very complex and complicated scene." Police noted that a large police presence will remain, and the scene remains active.

Several blocks of the area were surrounded by police, with blue and red plastic cones on certain areas to mark the evidence.

U.S. Shooting

In 2015, the deadliest mass shooting was reported in San Bernardino, California. The shooting killed at least 14 people at the Inland Regional Center, according to a Five Thirty-Eight News report.

The shooting in San Bernardino was also labeled as an "active shooter" incident. The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines the term as an incident wherein an individual or individuals "actively engage in killing or attempting to kill" people in a close and populated area.

A time trends analysis revealed that U.S. states with less strict gun control laws and higher rates of gun ownership show higher rates of mass shootings, according to The BMJ.

Massachusetts had the most restrictive gun laws, while Vermont had the most relaxed ones throughout the period of the analysis.

A 10-percent increase in gun ownership was linked to a more than 35 percent higher rate of mass shootings.
