Bad Bunny to Star as Spider-Man Character 'El Muerto' in Sony Marvel Universe
Bad Bunny will reportedly play the Marvel character El Muerto in a new addition to Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Sony Pictures revealed this on Monday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the Puerto Rican musician made a surprise appearance.
El Muerto, known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez in the comics, was a super-powered wrestler who fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match and nearly unmasks Peter Parker. Spider-Man saved him after his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, and the two eventually team up to defeat Dorado.
According to Deadline, El Muerto would be the first Latin superhero to get his own film in the universe of Marvel characters that would come right after Sony recently announced Madame Web. Sony's rushing to get the film into development was mainly due to Bad Bunny's persistence in finding the right superhero property for himself.
The Latin artist will have his major studio debut in the highly-anticipated action movie "Bullet Train" on July 29. Bad Bunny said it was an amazing experience working on "Bullet Train," adding that he loved working with David Leitch on his first film and now with this opportunity to bring El Muerto to life.
Bad Bunny was also recently seen in "Narcos: Mexico" and has "Cassandro" coming out with Gael Garcia Bernal. The Latin Grammy winner had also recently wrapped his arena tour, "El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo."
El Muerto's tentative release date is set for January 12, 2024.
Before Spider-Man Character El Muerto, Bad Bunny Stars in 'Bullet Train'
The Puerto Rican artist, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, will star in Sony Pictures' upcoming action-thriller film "Bullet Train" with an ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt and Joey King, according to NBC News.
Viewers who have seen the film's trailer saw Bad Bunny in the middle of a fighting sequence inside a train with Pitt. His recent experience wrestling at the WWE's WrestleMania may have come in handy.
The new film is directed by "Atomic Blonde" and "Deadpool 2" filmmaker David Leitch. It is based on the novel "Maria Beetle" by Kotaro Isaka.
The movie stars Pitt as Ladybug, an experienced assassin who boards a bullet train and faces several other professional killers.
The killers eventually realized that their various targets were all connected, with their assignments quickly getting out of control. "Bullet Train" is scheduled to premiere on July 15 in theaters.
Sony's Marvel Universe
Sony's Marvel Universe started with "Venom," featuring Tom Hardy as the alien symbiote. It did well enough to begin an entire franchise.
It was followed by "Let There Be Carnage" and "Morbius, according to The Direct. "Morbius" stars Jared Leto and follows a doctor trying to cure himself of a blood disease only to turn himself into a vampire.
Another Sony film is "Madame Web," which is the first female character from the Spider-Man universe to get her own film. It stars Dakota Johnson, and a recent report revealed that a new Doctor Strange-type figure might be on the way.
It was reported that Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney would also be included in Sony's "Madame Web." Sony is holding Madame Web herself in the same regard as Marvel's Doctor Strange because of her reported astral abilities and psychic sensory powers.
In the "Ultimate Spider-Man" animated show, there is a younger version character named Julia Carpenter. She acts as Spider-Woman, and the studio reportedly wanted a younger leading character. However, it's too early to tell just yet.
