Over 120,000 pounds of ground beef were recalled by a New Jersey company over possible contamination of a dangerous bacteria called E. Coli.

According to New York Post, the recall and warning were announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday, claiming that health watchdogs discovered the contamination during a routine imported product inspection by the agency's Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).

FSIS noted that the recall was issued by Lakeside Refrigerated Services. The said company is an establishment in Swedesboro in New Jersey. Specifically, at least 120, 872 pounds or over 60 tons of ground beef products were affected by the recall, Today pointed out.

The said ground beef products were reportedly shipped nationwide.

FSIS emphasized that the ground beef products were produced from February 1 through April 8, 2022.

The recalled products were identifiable by their establishment number: "EST 46841." The said detail is inscribed inside the USA mark of inspection.

Ground Beef Recall: Products Suspected to Be Contaminated With E. Coli

A total of 17 ground beef products were affected by the recall announced by the USDA.

The agency provided photos of the products, as well as their product code, in response to the issue.

The Post mentioned that ground beef from Thomas Farms, Nature's Reserve, and Tajima were among the products suspected to have E. coli.

SE Grocers Naturally Better 16 oz ground beef, 80 percent lean and 20 percent fat, were also among the affected products. The said brand of meat has product code number 138001021.

There were also ground beef products from the FSIS' list without photos of the label, but the agency provided the product numbers for easier tracking.

Among these are the ground beef products with the codes 139000020, 139001108, 139001103, 139002108, and 139000030. The ground beef products affected by the recalls include patties, meatloaf mix, and other varieties.

Consumers who have purchased the products were also warned to not consume the products, urging the public to throw them away or return them to the place where they purchased the ground beef products.

FSIS also noted in their advisory that consumers who have questions regarding the recall can reach them through live chat on Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time from Mondays through Fridays.

E.Coli Scare on Ground Beef Products

FSIS said the ground beef products are suspected of being contaminated with E. coli O103. This strain of the bacteria is reportedly more challenging to be detected than the STEC O157:H7.

People infected with the O103 strain of E. coli develop diarrhea that is often bloody, and some illnesses may last longer and can be more severe. This infection can often be detected through testing the stool sample.

Treatment for the infection is usually rehydration as well as other supportive care, per FSIS.

The agency also noted that hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, is rarely observed in patients who acquire the E. coli O103 strain. However, if HUS' symptoms, such as becoming paler or peeing less, are observed, the agency suggests seeking medical attention.

As of this writing, there were no reports of illnesses or adverse reactions in connection to the ground beef products that were recalled.
