A dead woman in Peru shocked the attendees of her funeral when she came back to life and knocked on her coffin.

According to Daily Star, Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca interrupted her own funeral in Lambayque city in Peru last week by banging on her coffin.

The Sun reported that Rosa Isabel had been mistakenly pronounced dead after a fatal crash on the region's Chiclayo-Picsi road, which also killed her brother-in-law, while her three nephews were seriously injured.

As doctors thought she was dead following the tragedy, Rosa Isabel was put into a coffin for her funeral last April 26. But mourners were shocked when they heard noises coming from her casket at the start of the service.

Her relatives, who had hoisted the coffin onto their shoulders, immediately lowered it and opened the lid to find the Peruvian woman alive and looking at them.

Cemetery caretaker Juan Segundo Cajo said he immediately went to his office and called the police after seeing the Peruvian woman "opened her eyes and was sweating."

Rosa Isabel's family then brought her - still inside the coffin - to the Referential Hospital Ferrenafe in Lambayeque. Medical personnel put Rosa Isabel on life support after noticing that she had signs of life. However, she died a few hours later.

Rosa Isabel's family is now calling on healthcare officials for answers to find out why she was declared dead "in the first place."

The aunt of the Peruvian woman told local media that they wanted to know why her niece pushed and touched the coffin when they were about to bury her, and they have the videos showing it.

Police in Peru were reported to be investigating the bizarre incident.

Like in Peru, Babies in Mexico Declared Dead but Found Alive

The woman in Peru was not the only case in Latin America that came to life after authorities declared her dead.

In Mexico, a premature baby named Jesus Sebastian was presumed dead at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) No. 16 General Hospital in Torreon in August last year. He was pronounced dead upon birth. He was born to a mother who was 23 weeks pregnant.

Jesus Sebastian was brought to the hospital morgue after doctors believed he died during delivery. Doctors ruled that the incident was a stillbirth.

The baby's mom told the doctors that she saw her child move. However, the doctors stayed firm with their initial assessment. They said it was only a reflex movement of an already deceased baby.

Reports said the family had signed a death certificate. However, they insisted on seeing the four-day-old baby to verify that he was really dead. Morgue personnel eventually noticed that Jesus Sebastian was still breathing and proceeded to save him.

As days passed, the family asked the public for prayers for the baby to come out of the hospital in good health. The baby was reported to be stable for almost a week until he passed away.

The lawyer for the family said medical reports showed that the baby had suffered two heart attacks. As the baby lost his life to alleged medical negligence, the family filed a complaint against the hospital. The hospital said it would carry out its own investigation into the case.

In October last year, another newborn infant in Mexico was declared dead by doctors. However, a funeral home found the baby alive inside a morgue refrigerator.

The said baby was also pronounced dead by doctors from general Hospital La Margarita located in Puebla City. Medical staff from the healthcare facility told the parents that the infant was dead, so the child was sent to the morgue.

The baby was then placed in the morgue refrigerator before the funeral home driver noticed that the baby started to cry and move. The incident prompted at least two parallel investigations from the hospital. 

Mexico's Puebla Governor Luis Miguel Barbosa also announced his intention to file criminal complaints against those responsible.

Other People Proclaimed Dead But Were Alive

There were also other people coming back from the dead in other parts of the world. In India, Budh Ram from Rajasthan was declared dead by doctors in 2018.

Daily Star reported that when the grieving family of the 95-year-old man started giving his body a ritual wash, he started shivering and came round. He said he was just having a nap.

In 1996, a farmer's wife named Daphne Banks from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, England was declared dead at a hospital on New Year's Day. The 61-year-old woman was sent to the mortuary, but luckily, an undertaker noticed her veins twitched on the slab. She was alive.

In Los Angeles, deceased Gerry Allison was in the back of a hearse in 1977 when a burst tire saw it crash. Witnesses were stunned to see him get out of the back of the damaged vehicle and walk away. Daily Star reported that the crash had brought him out of a deep coma.
