Celebrity siblings Julianne and Derek Hough are lucky enough to have had equally successful careers in the entertainment business.

But even though they have each other, the Houghs recently admitted that their road to success wasn't always easy given their difficult childhood.

The blonde-haired siblings graced the People magazine's June cover and sat down with the magazine to discuss life before the fame.

People reports that, when Julianne was just 10 and Derek was 13, they left their sheltered life in Utah and their three older sisters and parents (who were then going through a divorce) for the prestigious London dance school Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts to train as ballroom dance pros.

While studying at the dance school, the Hough siblings moved in with family friends and experienced a challenging schedule that required them to be in class every morning at 6:45 am.

Julianne and Derek also had to learn their way around the subway stations since they had to get to school by themselves.

"I remember one of my first days there I got off at the wrong train station," Julianne recalled riding the subway by herself. "I was just standing there thinking, 'Where am I?'"

In addition to dealing with the challenges of getting to school, Julianne and Derek also had difficulty being away from home and dealing with the pressure of having to always look their best on the dance floor. 

Julianne admitted that at a very young age, she had to constantly wear makeup and spray tans to fit into the mold of a polished dancer.

"When I look back, I think it's so sad I have no pictures of me with a cute, bare, 10-year-old face," Julianne said to People.

Despite their rocky journey, both Julianne and Derek are doing very well. They both gained their celebrity and fame on ABC's hit dance competition "Dancing with the Stars."

The siblings are also currently performing on their "Move Live" tour that has dates all they way till the end of July.

Despite their challenges and separation from their family at a very young age, Derek still credits his family for allowing him and his sister to leave the "nest" early to pursue their lifelong dreams.

"People will say, 'How could your parents let you go off to do that?'" Derek told People. "I think it's great that they saw an amazing opportunity. That is the reason we are here today."
