A gunman shot five people who were attending the funeral of a man who was shot dead by a police officer last month in Wisconsin.

According to Daily Mail, the funeral was being held for Da'Shontay L. King Sr. past 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin, when the unidentified gunman opened fire.

King's sister, Natasha Mullen, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that they were at the gravesite trying to get prepared to bury his brother when "bullets started flying everywhere." 

Police said they are now looking for the suspect, and it remains an "active shooter" situation as the gunman remains free to roam.

Citing a Racine Journal Times report, the New York Daily News said Ascension All Saints Hospital, the hospital treating the victims, went into lockdown after the shooting out of "an abundance of caution."

In a statement, Racine Mayor Cory Mason noted that the shooting at the cemetery, while a family was already mourning the loss of a loved one, is a "new low" for perpetrators of violence in their community.

Mason said ending violence is the top priority of the police department and his administration. The Journal Times reported that the casket remained above ground after the shooting, next to an open grave.

Shooting During a Funeral in a Wisconsin Cemetery

Mayor Cory Mason said he instructed the police department to actively enforce the city's juvenile curfew ordinance through the weekend, which means anyone under 18 must be home by 11 p.m., according to NPR.

According to residents in the area, they heard 20 to 30 shots, while three young men playing basketball at Lockwood Park said they heard shots, and the fence behind them was repeatedly hit.

Tre Brantley, one of the young men, said he started running to his car when he heard gunshots, adding that he and his brother, Kellyn Foster, both got into their car and ducked down.

Racine police told residents via Twitter to avoid the area in west Racine around the cemetery, calling the shooting "a critical incident." Authorities said all the victims of the shooting were members of King's family.

Da'Shontay King Sr. Shot Dead by Police in Wisconsin

Da'Shontay L. King Sr., who was a father of four, was shot and killed by a police officer on May 20. According to police, Officer Zachary B. Brenner attempted a traffic stop near 12th and Schiller as part of a firearms investigation at the time.

King reportedly got out of his vehicle armed with a gun, and Brenner asked him to stop and comply with commands. However, police said King allegedly refused and ran, prompting the cop to chase and shoot him. The incident was reportedly caught on body cameras.

Brenner, who had four years of experience in law enforcement, is now on administrative leave.He was reportedly executing search warrants on "identified" persons at the time when he stopped King's vehicle.

King's sister, Natasha, told WISN that her brother was all of their protectors. One of King's young sons also told the outlet that his father was the "best dad." 

King's family said they do not believe he would have shot the police officers, adding that it was not surprising that he ran. They believed King would have eventually dropped the gun and continued running as he did in the past. 

At the time of his death, King had three criminal cases open in Wisconsin - a drug charge, firearm possession, and bail jumping, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported. The investigation into his death is reportedly still ongoing.
