Former U.S. President Donald Trump has included House minority leader Kevin McCarthy on his list of endorsements for the 2022 midterm elections.

Independent reported that other candidates endorsed by Trump included California's Representative Darrel Issa, Sen. Chuck Grassley, and Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa.

Trump's endorsement of McCarthy is considered to be a significant move after the House minority leader was heard saying in an audio recording that he will urge the president to resign and may even support attempts to remove him from office in light of the January 6 attacks.

McCarthy was heard saying in the leaked audio that he had it with Trump, adding that what the former president did was "unacceptable." He also said that nobody can defend what Trump did and that "nobody should defend it."

McCarthy is considered a top contender for the position, such as Ohio's Jim Jordan and New York's Elise Stefanik.

Trump wrote that McCarthy had his "Complete and Total Endorsement."

Meanwhile, Trump remains on top of the likely 2024 GOP primary field. He has publicly hinted about plans to run for the White House again.

Trump is believed to be working to maintain and reestablish his relationships with Republican members of Congress as he fosters his power base in the party.

Donald Trump and Kevin McCarthy

Donald Trump and Kevin McCarthy praised each other last month at a GOP fundraising event, with the California Republican describing the former president as GOP's "secret weapon."

CNN news quoted McCarthy saying Trump could win the White House again, according to sources who were in the room.

Trump said in his endorsement letter that McCarthy is a "tireless advocate for the people of Bakersfield and the Central Valley."

Trump added that the minority leader is working hard to stop inflation, deliver water solutions, and hold U.S. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accountable for "their catastrophic failures and dereliction of duty."

Meanwhile, some Trump supporters were not happy with the former president's move to support McCarthy.

A Twitter user compared the McCarthy endorsement to Trump's decision to endorse Dr. Mehmet Oz for the Senate seat in Pennsylvania, according to an Axios report.

McCarthy's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

U.S. Midterm Elections

Several Republican candidates who Donald Trump endorsed have won in the latest round of primary polls ahead of midterm elections.

The U.S. midterm elections this year will determine the make of the country's legislature and governors nationwide.

Democratic and Republican registered voters in Kentucky, Idaho, North Carolina, Oregon, and Pennsylvania went to the polls to decide which contenders would represent their party in the November midterm elections.

Trump-endorsed candidate in North Carolina, U.S. Representative Ted Budd, won the state's Republican U.S. nomination, according to an Aljazeera report.

Budd had beaten former Gov. Pat McCrory and will face Democratic former state Chief Justice Cheri Beasley for the open Senate seat.

Beasley is also vying to become the state's first Black senator.
