LeBron James, Joe Biden, Barack Obama React to Devastating Roe v. Wade Overturn Decision
The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the landmark 1973 ruling on abortion, Roe v. Wade. The court ruling established the constitutional right to abortion. With the Supreme Court overturning it, more conservative states are expected to make abortion illegal or severely restrict abortion rights within the state.
The Supreme Court, which now has a majority of its justices leaning to the right, voted to overturn the ruling 5-4.
Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion, and he was joined by four other conservatives. Chief Justice John Roberts did not approve of fully getting rid of Roe V Wade, even though he voted with his fellow conservatives on the matter.
CNBC reports that Roe V. Wade allowed abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy and was accepted in the United States for almost 50 years. But with it being overturned, states can now determine their own abortion laws without any concern.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden Condemn Roe V. Wade Overturn
Democrats have been vocal in their condemnation of the Supreme Court decision. The overturning is seen as a major blow to women's rights and the right to choose what to do with their own bodies. Many have said that the decision has repercussions on the essential freedoms that Americans currently enjoy.
In a tweet, former President Barack Obama said it "relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologies." He sounded the call for voices to be heard regarding the issue.
Former first lady and wife of Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, expressed sadness about the decision, saying that she was heartbroken and added that the decision will have "devastating consequences." She joined her husband in calling for people to organize and stand up for their rights and freedoms.
The current U.S. President and Obama's former vice president echoed the sentiment. President Joe Biden described the overturn as "the culmination of a deliberate effort over decades to upset the balance of our law."

The condemnation has also been loud in the private sector. This includes both the NBA and the WNBA, with both sports organizations, together with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, releasing a joint statement via Twitter:
Other NBA personalities have also chimed in about their thoughts on the overturn of Roe V. Wade. In a retweet to a tweet by Pro-Choice author and lawyer Derecka Purnell, Lebron James wrote that the decision was all about power and control.
Portland Trailblazers' Josh Hart tweeted an apology to the women of the United States, with Memphis Grizzlies all-star Ja Morant completely agreeing with him on the issue.
Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving has been very vocal in his condemnation of the overturn of Roe V. Wade, tweeting that we must be able to protect women by any means necessary.
