Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Legal Battle Might Not Be Over Yet as Actress Says She Will Appeal Defamation Ruling
The camp of Amber Heard announced Friday that they are appealing the verdict in Johnny Depp's multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit he filed against his ex-wife.
The six-week defamation trial resulted in Depp winning most of his claims in the civil lawsuit, and the jury in a Fairfax, Virginia court only handed Heard one victory.
On June 1, Depp was awarded by the jury $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, Judge Penney Azcarate passed a written order on Friday's hearing for Heard to pay Depp $10.35 million, Los Angeles Times reported.
The judge reduced the punitive damages to $350,000 because of limits set by state law. On the other hand, Depp needs to pay his ex-wife $2 million.
Amber Heard Would Not Settle With Johnny Depp
On Friday, the two sides had their final chance to settle in front of the judge, but no agreement was reached, making the judgment official.
Heard's attorney Elaine Bredehoft said her client "absolutely" intends to appeal the verdict that largely favored Depp. Bredehoft sought to set a briefing schedule and more for a proposed appeal for the "Aquaman" actress, Deadline reported.
None of the two actors were present during the hearing. Depp and Heard were not required to attend. In a statement to The Independent, a spokesperson for Heard said one would not decline to appeal "if you know you are right."

Appeal Could Cost Amber Heard More Money
While a new settlement will not come until after the appeal, it looks like Amber Heard would be losing even more money. Azcarate informed Heard's attorney that the actress would have to put up an $8.35 million bond with six percent annual interest for any appeal to formally move forward.
The judge also told Bredehoft that if Heard wanted to appeal the verdict, her lawyer would have to file a motion with the court. Heard's camp has about 21 days to file an appeal. Bredehoft has admitted that her client does not have the money to pay her ex-husband or meet the bond.
Amber Heard has stuck by her claims of abuse by Johnny Depp. During her recent interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie, Heard released her therapist's notes which detailed Depp's alleged abuse of her.
The defamation case filed by Depp has become one of the most talked-about cases of 2022 and has come out as one of this year's biggest entertainment stories.
Depp and Heard have battled over a 2018 op-ed the actress wrote for the Washington Post, calling herself a domestic violence survivor.
The piece did not mention Depp by name, but the actor claimed he was booted from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise due to the "clear implication" that he was the abuser in his ex-wife's op-ed.
Johnny Depp also alleged that Amber Heard was the actual "perpetrator" of the violent encounters that damaged their relationship. He asked for $50 million in damages. The actress countersued for $100 million for nuisance.
