Gabby Petito Murder Movie Draws Ire of Twitterverse; Fans Say It’s ‘Absolutely Despicable,’ ‘Sick Entertainment’
The Gabby Petito story has gripped the nation and is certainly a tragedy that has many of her family, friends and fans reeling. However, Lifetime is adapting the story of her murder into a movie titled "The Gabby Petito Story."
The movie will be about the vlogger's life and tragic murder at the hands of her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie.
At the time of her death, she went on a cross-country backpacking trip with Laundrie, but would later go missing. Her body would later be found near a campsite inside a Wyoming national park. Laundrie would become the prime suspect, as he went home to Florida without Petito. However, Laundrie himself would go missing and also end up dead. In a letter found by authorities, Laundrie admitted to killing his girlfriend.
Vt reports that The Lifetime Network greenlit the movie as early as May, with actress Thora Birch not only playing her mother, Nichole Schmidt, but also directing it. The movie will explore Gabby Petito's complicated relationship with Brian Laundrie.
Gabby Petito's Family Did Not Consent to the Movie
The movie has drawn much criticism, however, as fans, critics, and even Petito's family have all blasted Lifetime for even greenlighting the movie. The Sun reports that Petito's family does not approve of the movie being made at all. The family also said that Lifetime "took it upon themselves" to make the movie.
The family released a statement through the AWARE Foundation, which is a foundation for missing and endangered persons, regarding the film. The statement made it clear that the Petito family has no connection to the film's production nor did the family give any sort of approval to Lifetime in order to produce the film.
Regardless of the family's disapproval of the movie being made, The Lifetime Network is still moving forward with the movie's production. It is expected to air later this year and will be part of the channel part of the network's "Stop Violence Against Women" campaign.
'- The Gabby Petito Story -' Gets Blasted on Social Media
Gabby Petito was a rising YouTube star and travel vlogger. In her short vlogging career, she has amassed plenty of fans and followers. And as a trailer of Lifetime's movie about her tragic death surfaced, fans began criticizing the channel on Twitter.

The movie has certainly drawn the ire of the Twitterverse, as critics have openly expressed their disgust at the film's production. Many pointed out that the family did not endorse the movie, while others criticized the network for making a movie just to make money off of a girl's tragic death. Others have also pointed out that making a movie was too soon, but even so, they should still have not done so as the family did not consent to it.
