Here's How Kamala Harris Reacted to Texas' Greg Abbott's Comments on Migrant Deaths
Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday hit back at Texas Governor Gregg Abbott after he blamed President Joe Biden for the deaths of the 53 migrants who were discovered inside a semi-truck in San Antonio this week.
Harris made her comments during an interview with NPR, commenting on how Abbott responded to the tragic deaths of the migrants, per Fox News.
"How the governor of that state responded really highlights part of the problem because his response when there are 50 dead bodies in his state is to go straight to politics... Instead of dealing with the realities of the issue," Harris said in the interview.
The vice president then pointed out that the Biden administration is taking the issue of human smuggling "seriously," pointing out that there have been over 2,000 arrests in the last three months in connection to the issue.
Harris further noted that there were also at least eight indictments that have happened.
Vice President Kamala Harris then placed the blame on the Trump administration.
"We also need to take seriously the fact that we have a broken immigration system that was decimated by the last administration," Harris said, stressing that the current administration was on the path of trying to fix the "broken system."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Blames Pres. Joe Biden on Deaths of Migrants
Days before Harris lashed out at the Texas governor, Abbott pointed his fingers at President Joe Biden after the migrants were found inside a semi-truck in San Antonio.
"These deaths are on Biden... They are the result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law," Abbott said.
On Tuesday, Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) blamed "poverty and desperation" for the deaths of the over 50 migrants. Amlo further noted that human trafficking and a lack of control in the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as the U.S. interior, played a role in the deaths of the asylum seekers.
The deaths included migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Authorities also discovered survivors, including four children. Authorities pointed out that the survivors were hot to the touch and were suffering from heat exhaustion.
Texas to Increase Truck Checkpoints Following Migrant Deaths
On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the lone star state will add new checkpoints for trucks that will enter the state from Mexico.
Abbott emphasized that the Department of Public Safety (DPS) will "establish a checkpoint strategy" immediately. The said checkpoints would target trucks like the one that was used where the migrants died.
Abbott did not mention the exact positions of the checkpoints, contending that Texas would want to surprise cartels and smugglers.
However, DPS Director Steve McGraw suggested that checkpoints would be along "smuggling corridors" that connect ports of entry from Mexico to major Texas cities like San Antonio and Houston.
