Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking more support from other countries like Argentina and Chile as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukrainian territory. 

Zelenskyy is reportedly seeking support from Latin America, as he talked to Argentina's President Alberto Fernández and Chile's President Gabriel Boric on Friday.

The conversations occurred a little more than two weeks after Zelenskyy spoke with Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso and Guatemala's President Alejandro Giammattei. 

In a speech, the comedian-turned-president announced that his conversations with Lasso and Giammattei was the beginning of Ukraine's efforts to restore relations with Latin America.

Argentina Offers Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Help in Negotiating With Russia

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a 35-minute phone call with Argentina's leader, Alberto Fernandez. According to the Associated Press, Fernandez, the current head of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean states, offered Zelenskyy help in its negotiations with Russia. 

The Argentinian government released a statement, saying Fernandez told Zelenskyy that Latin America is a "continent of peace" and therefore rejects the use of force and promotes dialogue in order to resolve conflicts.

Before Russia's President Vladimir Putin tried to invade Ukraine, Argentina had been trying to improve relations with Moscow. In early February, Fernandez visited Moscow and sat down with Putin. 

The Argentinian president suggested that Argentina should be Russia's "entry door to Latin America." However, after the invasion began, Alberto Fernandez condemned Russia's actions.

Chile Offers Ukraine More Help

In a statement on social media, Gabriel Boric of Chile talked about his phone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Boric expressed his solidarity with the embattled people of Ukraine, who are currently facing increased assaults from Russian forces.

The Chilean leader also said he was willing to support the condemnations of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and told Zelenskyy that "Ukraine has a friend in South America."

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy thanked Gabriel Boric for Chile's support in the United Nations. He also discussed how Chilean specialists could help in getting rid of explosive mines in Ukraine.

The meetings with the South American leaders also came right after Zelenskyy talked with leaders of the G7 during the G7 Summit in Austria. There, the United States and its allies vowed to support Ukraine in the war for "as long as it takes."

U.S. President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders sought to illustrate their commitment to Ukraine by finalizing plans to put a price cap on Russian oil, raise tariffs on Russian goods, and impose new sanctions on the Kremlin.

According to NBC News, the United States is planning to provide medium-range and long-range surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine, as well as additional artillery ammunition and counter-battery radars.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pled with G-7 leaders to speed up their support as Russia intensifies its operations in the Donbas region. Russians have also continued missile strikes across Ukraine, with a Russian missile hitting a residential building in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv late last month.
