Tiger Woods Unsure How Long He Can Still Play
Golf legend Tiger Woods has had a stellar and legendary career that spans decades. He is currently playing at the British Open at St. Andrews, probably for the final time as it is not likely to return to the "Old Course" any time soon. When talking about ending his career, however, he is more unsure.
The Associated Press reported that the American golf legend is unwilling to contemplate his future in the sport. The 46-year-old was asked if he would be able to compete again when the British Open returns to St. Andrews in four years or more. To this, he answered, "Who knows?"
Tiger Woods Wanted To Play at St. Andrews
The Old Course in St. Andrews is the oldest golf course in the world, while the British Open, or "The Open," is the oldest golf tournament in the world. However, it is a tradition that the British Open only returns to St. Andrews once every five years. This year, they are holding the tournament there once again.
Because of this, Tiger Woods said he wanted to play at St. Andrews specifically this year. Woods admitted he does not know how many Open Championships he has left in him but said he wanted this one.
PGA's official website reported that Woods noted his history in the "Old Course" during his press conference. He made his British Open debut there in 1995. He said that if it ends this year in 2022, then it ends. "If it doesn't, it doesn't," he added.
The American said he does not know what his career will be like, as he admits he will not be playing a full schedule ever again. He explained that his body would not allow it. However, he said that if he gets to play at St. Andrews again for the British Open one more time, "it would be great."
Woods also noted that he now has "plenty of hardware" in his right knee, which was previously injured in a horrific car crash.
This edition of the British Open is even more special, as this is the 150th time that the tournament is being held. Woods has won two of his three British Open championships at the "Old Course."
Tiger Woods Going Old School at the World's Oldest Golf Course in the World's Oldest Golf Tournament
The British Open will kick off in its original home at St. Andrews on July 14 and end on July 17. But before that, Tiger Woods took to the course for some practice. However, according to Golf.com, he went old school at the "Old Course" by carrying a 4-Iron.
Woods, who is trying to turn back the clock at The Open, said that the firm ground will be the key. He said that the fairways are faster than the greens right now. He added that because the fairways are fast and firm, it would allow the older players like himself to have a chance.
Rory McIlroy, another golf legend, spoke about Tiger Woods' chances and said nobody is better at playing that sort of chess game on a golf course like Tiger.
Woods has been very busy since arriving at St. Andrews, as he walked the course to find his feel for the historic venue.
