Is Will Smith Still Among Hollywood's Highest-Earning Actors Despite Oscars Slap Scandal With Chris Rock?
Will Smith is still among Hollywood's highest-paid actors despite the controversies he has been through earlier this year, including the Oscars slap scandal.
According to Variety's list of Hollywood stars' salaries, Smith comes second among the top biggest earners. The actor has signed on to star in the action thriller "Emancipation" in June 2020, which earned him $35 million.
To date, Daily Mail reported that Will Smith's biggest paycheck was for his 2012 film "Men In Black 3." The actor reportedly earned around $100 million.
The number one on the list was Tom Cruise. Sources told Variety that Cruise is expected to make more than $100 million from ticket sales, his salary, and his cut of home entertainment rentals and streaming revenue for his latest film, "Top Gun: Maverick."
The movie has already earned nearly $1.2 billion at the global box office. Cruise is not only a star in the sequel but also a producer.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt tied in the third spot, earning $30 million each. DiCaprio earned his money from the upcoming film "Killers of the Flower Moon," while Pitt earned his money from his untitled Formula 1 drama.
Dwayne Johnson bags the fourth spot for earning $22.5 million for the film "Black Adam." Vin Diesel, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hardy, Will Ferrell, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington, and Ryan Reynolds tied in the fifth spot earning $30 million each from their respective film projects.
Jason Momoa and Eddie Murphie were in the sixth spot for earning $15 million each. Chris Pine was in the seventh spot as he made $13 million for "Star Trek 4."
Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, and Margot Robbie all placed in the eighth spot earning $12.5 million for their respective films, "Minion: The Rise of Guru" and "Barbie."
Millie Bobbie Brown took the ninth spot as she earned $10 million for "Enola Holmes 2," and Timothée Chalamet in the 10th spot for making $9 million for the "Wonka" movie.
Will Smith's 'Emancipation' Movie Release Delayed After Oscars Slap Scandal
The release of Will Smith's action thriller "Emancipation" was delayed following the Oscars slap scandal.
In May, it was announced that the film's release would be pushed back to 2023, citing production delays. However, the news followed after Smith struck Oscar host Chris Rock on stage during the Academy Awards.
Apple won a bidding war for the distribution rights to the movie. Antoine Fuqua is directing "Emancipation." The film's principal photography started in New Orleans in the summer of 2021.
Will Smith Oscars Slap Scandal
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony on March 27 after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith being bald.
Rock apparently did not know that Jada suffers from hair loss due to alopecia. A day after the incident, Smith took to Instagram to say sorry to the comedian, claiming that he was wrong and embarrassed by what he did.
The Academy has banned the actor from attending the Oscars, whether in-person or virtual, for at least 10 years. The decision of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors was quickly acknowledged by Smith. However, the Academy did not ask Smith to return the Oscars trophy for "King Richard."
