Former U.S. President Donald Trump released a statement saying that FBI agents "raided" his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida.

NBC News reported that the former president further claimed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation's presence in his home was unannounced and that it was "politically motivated." Trump did not provide further details.

In Trump's email statement, he claimed that the occurrences "are dark times for our Nation." The statement was issued by his Save America political committee.

The former president said that the FBI agents even broke into his safe, adding that the raid on his home was "not necessary or appropriate."

A person knowledgeable about the matter noted that the law enforcement agency is not disputing that it searched the former president.

Trump's Mar-a-Lago Home Raid

Sources said that the search appeared to be focused on material that Donald Trump had brought with him to Mar-a-Lago when he left the White House at the end of his presidency, according to The New York Times report. The boxes reportedly contained many pages of classified documents.

Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota noted that the FBI search of the former president's home was an "unprecedented political" use of the Justice Department. Noem wrote that using the department in this manner is "un-America." The lawmaker is known to be a Trump ally.

Meanwhile, the January 6 select committee has refused to comment on the matter, saying that there is a need to learn more about the visit to Trump's Mar-a-Lago home.

Trump claimed that the FBI's move was supported by Democrats who "desperately" do not want him to run for reelection in 2024.

Al Jazeera report noted that the former president was not in his Mar-a-Lago home when the FBI agents arrived. At the time, he was seen leaving Trump Tower in New York City, where he also has a residence.

Justice Department spokesperson Dena Iverson refused to comment on whether Attorney General Merrick Garland had allowed the search.

Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that U.S. President Joe Biden's top aides discovered the FBI search from reports on Twitter and had no advance notice, according to a Democratic source.

Donald Trump and White House documents

The raid was reportedly a result of an inquiry that discovered the former president bringing home 15 boxes of White House documents containing mementos, gifts, and letters.

The National Archives maintained that the boxes include materials subjected to the Presidential Records Act.

The National Archives archivists found documents containing "items marked as classified national security information" after Trump returned the boxes.

White House aides noted that Trump would often tear up documents, which later had to be taped together.

The Presidential Records Act required all communications about presidential duties to be reserved.

The archives department had referred the occurrence to the Justice Department.

Trump is also being investigated for possible illegal business practices, his role in the January 6 Capitol riot, and his attempts to distort the results of U.S. elections in 2020.
