In events of life changes, social security updates such as changing your name on it will be needed.

There can be a number of reasons why you would need a change name on your Social Security cards, such as marriage, divorce, and other reasons.

Go Banking Rates reported that one changes name on a Social Security card by applying to the Social Security Administration to have your name changed or corrected on your Social Security Card. However, individuals cannot do the process online.

Change Name on Social Security Card

Certain documents are needed to verify applicants' citizenship, name change, and identity for their Social Security Card.

For a U.S.-born adult, at least two not expired original documents will be needed. Accepted records that can be used to prove citizenship include U.S. birth certificates and U.S. passports.

To prove your identity to SSA, you can use a U.S. driver's license, state-issued non-driver identification card, and U.S. passport.

Meanwhile, the name change process in your Social Security card requires different documents such as marriage documents, divorce decree, Certificate of Naturalization, and court order approving the name change.

The SSA may ask you for supporting documents if you cannot provide some of the documents stated above.

The documents that could be asked from you include employment identification card, school identification card, health insurance card, and U.S. military identification card.

Get New Social Security Card

The SSA offers three ways to acquire a new Social Security card if you have lost or damaged your card.

The agency still requires claimants to provide certain documents for their request for a new Social Security card to be approved.

MARCA News reported that asking for a new Social Security card can be done online and through email. However, the SSA advises applicants not to send their original documents through mail.

The agency also does not accept photocopied documents that are not certified by the department that issued those.

Applicants will also need to prove that they are U.S. citizens to get a new card. It would need documents such as your birth certificate or passport. However, if you have already established your citizenship, the SSA will not require these.

The administration also needs proof of age with a religious record document, birth certificate, hospital record of birth, and a U.S. passport. However, the SSA clarified that they do not accept hospital souvenir birth certificates as proof of identity.

Applicants are urged to make a Social Security account through My Social Security and opt for the "Replace Your Social Security Card" prompt once signed in.

SSA noted that there is a limitation in requesting a replacement of Social Security Cards.

Recipients may receive three per calendar year and 10 in a lifetime.

The agency may make room for exceptions if there is enough evidence from an official source that a new Social Security card is required.
