Republican Senators Divided on Donald Trump's Alleged Retention of Top Secret White House Documents in Mar-a-Lago | Here's Why
As the investigation of former President Donald Trump's alleged retention of top secret White House documents in Mar-a-Lago runs further, officials in the Republican Party are now becoming divided about whether to side with him or not.
Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger and Missouri Senator Roy Blunt are seemingly on the other side of the fence with their recent statements, calling out Trump for his alleged wrongdoings.
However, some officials of the GOP still remained strong and confident that the move to raid Mar-a-Lago was a "political witchhunt" from the Democrats, pressing that the redacted, Mar-a-Lago affidavit does not give the FBI a clear motive to search.
Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger Blasts Donald Trump's Alibi
Adam Kinzinger expressed his frustrations on NBC's "Meet the Press" about Donald Trump's alleged retention of top-secret federal documents at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.
"The hypocrisy of folks in my party that spent years chanting, 'Lock her up,' about Hillary Clinton because of some deleted emails or - quote/unquote - 'wiping a server,' are now out there defending a man who very clearly did not take the national security of the United States to heart," Kinzinger said.
The Guardian described Kinzinger, a Republican Illinois Congressman, as one of Trump's most vocal critics in his own political party.
According to Kinzinger, he was "disgusted" by Trump's actions, noting that "no President should act this way."
Legal analysts fear that Trump's actions violate various federal laws, including the Espionage Act, which could lead to a possible indictment.
Notably, Kinzinger was also one of the only two Republicans on the January 6 Capitol attack committee investigating Trump for inciting violence among his loyal supporters.
However, it was not only Congressman Adam Kinzinger who had called out Donald Trump.
Missouri Senator Roy Blunt Wanted Donald Trump to Return the Documents
According to ABC News, Republican Senator Roy Blunt was also among the people in the Grand Old Party (GOP) who thought Donald Trump should have done the opposite of what he allegedly did.
"He should have turned the documents over and apparently had turned a number of documents over, George. What I wonder about is why this could go on for almost two years, and less than 100 days before the election, suddenly we're talking about this rather than the economy, or inflation, or even the student loan program you and I were going to talk about today," the senator said in the interview.
Apart from the callout, Blunt has also underscored the former President's right to get an independent party, or a special master, to sort through the documents he has not yet turned over.
MSN reported it as a win for Donald Trump after a former appointee signaled to likely back him as a special master to the case.
