Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Case: Here's What We Know About the Rape Allegation From Kathryn Mayorga
After a U.S. judge threw a civil case alleging that Cristiano Ronaldo raped Kathryn Mayorga in a Las Vegas hotel room, the woman is now appealing the judge's decision.
Mayorga, 37, reportedly wanted to overturn a $375,000 out-of-court settlement agreed with the Portuguese soccer player in 2010.
Mayorga's attorneys are expected to go to court in San Francisco this week. According to the Daily Mail, her lawyers are reigniting the case, claiming their client signed the hush money payment she agreed to under duress.
Mayorga has appealed the dismissal decision at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. A mediator will be hearing the case this Tuesday during a one-hour phone hearing.
Mayorga is reportedly now seeking $75 million more in damages. Before she agreed to the payment, though, she previously sued the Portuguese soccer star in a civil suit worth £54 million ($63 million).
However, that case was thrown out by Judge Jennifer Dorsey last June because of several "bad faith" actions committed by her lawyer, who also allegedly relied on leaked documents.
Reports noted that her lawyer used the "Football Leaks" website documents in Kathryn Mayorga's case.
Timeline of Kathryn Mayorga's Civil Case Against Cristiano Ronaldo
Kathryn Mayorga was a former model and a teacher. She accused Cristiano Ronaldo of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.
The Manchester United star has always maintained that their sexual relations were consensual and denied the rape allegations against him. He called the allegations "fake news."
The two first met in Las Vegas as they partied at the RAIN Nightclub in 2009. Pictures of the two dancing, drinking and partying surfaced online.
The former model then made her allegations against Ronaldo known in 2010, the same year as the settlement. Three years later, she claimed to be mentally incapacitated and filed a lawsuit against the soccer star.
Her claims became public a few years later, in 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.
Mayorga's latest suit was a bid to overturn the non-disclosure agreement she agreed to sign in 2010. It was then thrown out because of her attorney's actions.
Criminal Probe Was Opened for Rape Case but Cristiano Ronaldo Not Prosecuted
Las Vegas Police launched an investigation surrounding the rape case in 2019. However, according to reports, a district attorney ultimately announced that they were not prosecuting the soccer star.
Police reportedly thought they had enough evidence to charge the Portuguese forward with one count of sexual assault. They even went as far as obtaining an arrest warrant for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Unfortunately, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson disagreed. According to the transcript, the DA threw the case out.
Mayorga's attorney, Leslie Mark Stovall, noted that Wolfson refused to prosecute when the arrest warrant was submitted to the district attorney's office.
He did not say why he declined. However, Wolfson later announced in July 2019 that Kathryn Mayorga did not have enough evidence to back her claims.
