After allegedly placing a dummy in his cell, a life-sentenced bomber who had previously carried out a devastating explosion on the Las Vegas Strip in 2007 vanished from a Nevada prison. His absence was not found for several days.

The Nevada Department of Corrections has confirmed that the Las Vegas bomber, Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, 42, disappeared from the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs Friday night, according to New York Post.

During a head count on Tuesday at around 7 a.m., staff at the medium-security jail became aware that the inmate was missing; an hour later, they began a search for him.

To deceive the guards and prevent the discovery of his escape, Duarte-Herrera made a fake, probably out of cardboard, and put it in his cell.

Gov. Steve Sisolak requested to investigate the prison break and called it "unacceptable."

"This kind of security lapse cannot be permitted, and those responsible will be held accountable," Sisolak stated Tuesday.

Authorities Are Warning the Public to Be On the Alert for Porfirio Duarte-Herrera

Porfirio Duarte-Herrera is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds, has brown hair and eyes, and has no tattoos.

Authorities advised against approaching him because they believed he was dangerous. Instead, call 911 if anyone knows where he is or has any information.

NDOC is still looking into how the Las Vegas bomber got out of Nevada prison. It is also unclear why it took so long for guards to notice he was gone.

The prison was put on complete lockdown Tuesday, according to the department, and "escape procedures" were started about 8 a.m. when a second emergency headcount revealed Duarte-Herrera had vanished, USA Today reported.

NDOC stated that the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers had joined the search for Duarte-Herrera.

Why Did Porfirio Duarte-Herrera Commit the Crime?

Las Vegas Bomber Duarte-Herrera, who was given a life sentence for murder using a dangerous weapon, came to the Corrections Department in February 2010 from Clark County.

In 2007, a pipe bomb that Duarte-Herrera and Omar Rueda-Denvers put in the parking garage of the Luxor hotel-casino killed Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio. He worked at a hot dog stand.

According to the prosecutors, the attack was meant for 24-year-old Dorantes Antonio, who was dating Rueda-Denvers' ex-girlfriend.

Records from the Corrections Department show that Rueda-Denvers, 47, was still incarcerated in different state prison, as reported by NBC News.

According to the prosecution, jealousy was the driving force for the assault on a two-story parking structure's top deck. The explosion sparked initial worries about a terrorist strike in the Strip.

Duarte-Herrera came from Nicaragua, and Rueda-Denvers came from Guatemala. Both are illegal immigrants. Their initial sentence was the death penalty, but a Clark County District Court jury spared them and received a life sentence instead.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Marshals Service will reward $5,000 to anyone who can provide information to capture the escaped Las Vegas bomber.
