Indiana Police Identified the Victims in Gary Shootings
The victims have been identified as April King, 50, Arlandus Jackson, 37, and two Gary teens, Bobby Wright, 14, and Dayvion Jones, 16.
"We believe that all the individuals were targeted by a specific person. It just so happened that it happened with a short period of time, and we're working toward it," said Gary Police Chief Brian Evans.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, King was gunned down in the 2600-block of Jackson Street on Sunday afternoon. Later that evening, Jackson was killed outside in the 900-block of Williams Street. On Monday morning, the two teens were found dead outside a house in the 2900-block of West 11th Avenue.
"We have to invest very heavily in education, preventive measures for our youth, and try to curtail some of the violence," Evan said. "We're not immune to it, we're part of it, and we're doing everything that we can to investigate the crimes."
For his part, Gary Mayor Jerome Prince promised to prioritize public safety and to continue working with youth initiatives to prevent this crime.
Schools, Community Grief Over Victims in Gary Shootings
Grief counselors were provided at the Gary Community Schools Tuesday to help students and teachers process the deaths of two Gary teens while neighbors dealt with the tragedy so close to home, Chicago Tribune reported. Wright attended Bailly STEM Academy, while James attended West Side Leadership Academy.
Paige McNulty, manager of the Gary Community School Corp., noted that the recent horrible events deeply saddened them, adding that their thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims.
Tahja Johnson, who lives in the building adjacent to the house where the teens' bodies were found, said she was away until Sunday night and did not hear or see anything. She was home when the teens' dead bodies were discovered.
"It was just like a horrible sight... I just felt pain. When it's a child, it really hurts different," she said. Cy'eisha Howard, Wright's sister, noted that his brother loved his family and was a father figure to their baby brother."And now our baby brother doesn't have that no more... You all did that to a baby?" said Howard.
Meanwhile, police said no arrests had been made yet in any of these cases, but they were working on some leads.
