California Gov. Gavin Newsom Rejects Charles Manson Cult Member's Parole
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has blocked the parole of a Charles Manson cult member, Patricia Krenwinkel.
People reported that Newsom slammed the recommendation for her release after citing the inmate still shows an "unreasonable danger to society if paroled at this time."
The recent rejection of Krenwinkel's parole was the 15th time the parole was unsuccessful.
Newsom said that Krenwinkel "fully accepted Mr. Manson's racist, apocalyptical ideologies." The Democratic governor added that Krenwinkel was not only a victim of Manson's abuse.
The California governor said that Krenwinkel was also a "significant contributor to the violence and tragedy" that has become the Manson family's legacy.
Newsom acknowledged that Krenwinkel's completion of rehabilitation and education programs during her time behind the bar has "demonstrated effusive remorse." However, he believed that Krenwinkel's efforts have not significantly reduced her risk of being dangerous.
Patricia Krenwinkel's Parole Blocked
Patricia Krenwinkel became the state's longest-serving female inmate, according to her lawyer, Keith Wattley. This is after another Manson family member Susan Atkins died of cancer in prison in 2009, as reported by Aljazeera News.
Newsom said that Krenwinkel played a leadership role in the cult and was "an enforcer of Manson's tyranny."
The California leader added that the former cult member had forced other women in the cult to follow Manson and prevented them from leaving the cult.
One of Krenwinkel's victim's relatives, Anthony DiMaria, had urged Newsom to block Krenwinkel's release, citing the rarity, severity and "egregious nature of her crimes." DiMaria is the nephew of Jay Sebring.
He added that Krenwinkel's actions sparked the whole "Helter Skelter legacy," which caused permanent scars. DiMaria noted that it also inspired at least two ritualized killings years later.
The last surviving member of Sharon Tate's immediate family, Debra Tate, dismissed Krenwinkel's explanation that she was enticed to Manson's cult by alcohol use and having a non-supportive family while growing up.
Patricia Krenwinkel in Manson Family
Patricia Krenwinkel grew up in Los Angeles and met Manson while she was living with her sister in Manhattan Beach in 1967. At age 21, she became a follower of Manson and participated in Manson's plans for Helter Skelter.
Krenwinkel was also present for the murders on Cielo Drive and testified that she was the one to murder Abigail Folger, according to an LAist report.
She said she first stabbed Folger in the living room of the house and chased her outside, then stabbed her several more times.
Aside from being present in the Cielo Drive murders, Krenwinkel also participated in the LaBianca murders, admitting to stabbing Leno with a fork and writing "DEATH TO PIGS" on the wall of their home.
She was sentenced to death in 1971, but her sentence was commuted to life in prison the following year.
Krenwinkel is currently held at the California Institution for Women in Ohio. She has also managed to earn a bachelor's degree in human services while in prison.
