Washington: Man Charged with Second Degree Murder for 2016 Killing of Half-Sister Before Putting Her Body Parts in Suitcase
Washington man David Haggard has been found guilty of second-degree murder after he was convicted of killing his half-sister, Jamie Haggard, and placing her dismembered body parts inside a suitcase in 2016.
Fox News reported that the 48-year-old Washington murder suspect was found guilty by a King County jury for killing his 27-year-old half-sister.
Court documents noted that Jamie's dismembered body was also partially burned. She was stuffed inside a suitcase on the side of the road in Snohomish County two years later after she was reported missing in June 2016.
King County detectives spoke with numerous witnesses during the investigation into Jamie's disappearance.
Witnesses noted that Jamie had a volatile relationship with her brother. Jamie also told her boyfriend on several instances that she was afraid that David was going to kill her, according to a KIRO 7 News report.
Officials found the remains of Jamie, and the body's state was so decomposed that it took two months to identify her body.
Work crews initially found the remains of Jamie stuffed inside a suitcase. The cleaning crew was picking up trash along Highway 522 at the time.
Washington Suitcase Murder
The siblings were arguing in 2016, with David knocking out Jamie in the house they had been staying in together.
Court documents stated that David told a friend he should kill his half-sister, as reported by Herald Net.
David kicked his half-sister out, thinking Jamie had stolen from him and a housemate, who later allowed Jamie to return to the house, according to police.
The siblings reportedly argued the next morning again, with David sending a picture to a housemate of Jamie tied up in the bathtub.
The housemate called the police. When authorities arrived, Jamie reportedly denied her half-brother harmed her and blamed the housemate.
Jamie spent the night in a friend's house and returned to the Kenmore home the next day to pick up her belongings. She arrived at the house with David being with his girlfriend. His girlfriend then left to take her child to school, leaving David and Jamie alone.
David's girlfriend received a text from Jamie's phone later in the afternoon, wherein the text read that she and David needed to get out of the Kenmore house.
The girlfriend believed that David sent her the text. She returned to the house and found Jamie gone.
Jamie was supposed to pick up her boyfriend from jail that afternoon. When he was released, he called her to no avail. He then went to the Kenmore home looking for her.
Jamie's father reported her missing a week later.
David Haggard Found Guilty
Court documents noted that David went to "extreme lengths to cover up the crime," even using burning construction equipment so police could not get his fingerprints.
The documents also revealed that a witness told David in 2019 that they thought they spotted Jamie twice, to which David replied that it "was not possible."
FOX 13 news report noted that officials have not yet announced David's date for sentence.
Second-degree murder sentences can range from 10 to 40 years in prison, according to local law groups.
