A monument erected in memory of Edgar Guzman Lopez, one of the sons of Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, was adorned with flowers during the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico.

According to Infobae, photos of the cenotaph, which is located outside a commercial plaza in Culiacan, Sinaloa, where Edgar Guzman was killed, circulated on social media on November 1.

A cenotaph is a monument erected in memory of a deceased person or a group of people whose remains are elsewhere. The cross-shaped funerary monument of Edgar Guzman was reportedly decorated with a big square frame full of white and red flowers. 

The cenotaph of El Chapo's son is usually embellished with flowers on important dates, such as his birthday.

In celebration of his birthday last May 30, a structure of flower-filled pillars was erected on the funerary monument of Edgar Guzman, who was reportedly one of El Chapo's favorite sons and chosen successor.

Edgar Guzman Lopez, Son of Sinaloa Cartel Boss El Chapo, Assassinated in Parking Lot

Edgar Guzman Lopez, the eldest son of El Chapo, was killed by a group of men in May 2008 in a parking lot of a shopping center in the Desarrollo Urbano Tres Rios neighborhood in Culiacan.

According to Reuters, around 40 hitmen opened fire on Edgar Guzman and two other men as they parked their armored pickup truck.

The three men died while the assassins fled in pickup trucks. Investigators said they recovered 500 bullet shell casings at the scene after the shoot-out.

Edgar Guzman was reportedly gunned down by his father's hired killers in a case of mistaken identity. According to local reports, El Chapo's son was mistaken for Arturo Beltran Leyva, the head of the rival Beltran Leyva cartel.

Veteran Mexican journalist Anabel Hernandez earlier wrote that the Sinaloa Cartel boss seemed to have become merciful as he pardoned the assassins, and there were no reprisals.

El Chapo's Sons Are Leading the Sinaloa Cartel

The four sons of El Chapo, known as Los Chapitos, had reportedly assumed leadership roles in the Sinaloa cartel after their father was arrested and extradited to the U.S.

Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and his brothers Ovidio Guzman Lopez, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, and Jesus Alfredo Guzman had allegedly shared control of the Sinaloa cartel along with their uncle Aureliano "El Guano" Guzman and co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.'

If he had not been assassinated, Edgar Guzman Lopez would likely be among the Los Chapitos as he was also taught the ins and outs of the narco trade at a young age.

The Sinaloa cartel has continued to be one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels despite the arrest of its boss, El Chapo.

The infamous Sinaloa Cartel boss was first arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico, where he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking.

But in 2001, El Chapo escaped from prison. He was arrested again in 2014 in Sinaloa and escaped again from prison through a tunnel the following year.

Mexican officials announced in January 2016 that El Chapo had been captured again. He was extradited to the U.S. the following year.

El Chapo was sentenced to spend the rest of his days in the ADX Florence "supermax" prison in Colorado after being sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 on multiple drug-related charges.
