"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" will not just heavily feature black and African culture, but also Mayan and Aztec culture. The film will show an Aztec-inspired Atlantis, with Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta playing the Marvel superhero, Namor.

The film has set a milestone as Huerta is of indigenous heritage, according to NBC News. He stated that there has been a lack of representation in his home country, Mexico. The Latino actor describes the diversity there as "like a Scandinavian country, as all people featured are white, be it on TV or in ads.

He adds that when a company like Marvel Studios tells a diverse superhero story that focuses primarily on Black and Indigenous characters from East Africa and Mesoamerica, it shows "the rest of the world that representation matters."

Huerta plays Namor, the King of Atlantis and one of the oldest and most important characters in the comic books.

"When they decide to give this background to Namor, you know, this new background - Mesoamerican culture, especially Mayan culture - I think they nailed it," he said.

He also added that on one hand, it is the right moment, while on the other, it is important for many people, especially kids.

Huerta explained that roles like Namor will tell kids with darker skin tones that there is nothing wrong with them and that they should be proud of who they are.

"And the melanin in your skin ... it's OK and it's beautiful," the actor stated.

Tenoch Huerta Hopes Black Panther 2 Will Have Latin Americans Embrace Their Roots

The Atlantis of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a lot different from the comics, highlighting the multiverses and the myriad of possibilities in Marvel. Namor, Huerta's character, hails from Talocan, an underwater nation inspired by the Tlalocan of Aztec mythology. This marries the traditional views of Atlantis with Mesoamerican cultures like the Aztecs and the Maya.

For Huerta, he sees this concept as a perfect way to help people to better understand the Indigenous and African contributions to Latin American history, particularly, for Mexico.

According to The Verge, Huerta recently spoke at a press junket for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and said that while "almost everybody in Mexico has Indigenous or African roots," they often deny aspects of their heritage. He said that the topic needs more discussion, and the movie might help people embrace that aspect.

"I hope this helps people to embrace who they are. Who we are," he said.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Actor Hoping for Namor Solo Movie

While Namor is the big villain in the film, he is also one of the Marvel franchise's most important anti-heroes. Speaking to Digital Spy, the Mexican actor stated that he wants to see a Namor solo movie.

Huerta stated he would like it, but it all depends on what Kevin Feige wants, the inbox, and how many tickets fans buy.

The actor also stated that he and director Ryan Coogler decided to go big on Namor's humanity and that in the end, the King of Atlantis is just a "simple man" trying to save his family and protect his people and his culture.
