One of the most iconic voice actors in the industry has now passed away, as the long-time voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, has succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was 66. He was Vengeance. He was the Night. He was Batman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Conroy died on Thursday in New York after a short battle with cancer. Warner Brothers announced his passing.

Steven Neibert, who worked with Conroy as his agent, told the BBC that "[t]he voiceover community lost one of the greats." He added that he was completely devastated by his charge's passing as he has worked with him for over 25 years.

Kevin Conroy's Stellar Career in Voice Acting

Conroy made a name for himself with one very important role, and that was voicing Bruce Wayne on Batman: The Animated Series from 1992-1996. His deep voice became so synonymous with the character that he continued to reprise the role for nearly 60 different productions,

He voiced Batman across 14 films and 400 episodes of television. He also reprised the role in other media like video games, famously voicing Batman in the critically-acclaimed Arkham series.

Casting and dialogue director Andrea Romano stated that he was more than an actor to her, but also a dear friend of over 30 years, "Kevin's warm heart, delightfully deep laugh, and pure love of life will be with me forever," she stated.

Kevin Conroy studied acting at Juilliard alongside Superman himself, Christopher Reeve. He was also roommates with Robin Williams.

Then he started acting onstage before landing TV roles in shows like Dynasty, Tour of Duty, and Ohara back in the 1980s. He also appeared on other noteworthy shows as a guest like Cheers, Murphy Brown, Spenser: For Hire and Matlock.

However, everything changed in 1992 when he was cast as Batman himself. Conroy continued to voice Batman until finally landing a live-action role as an elderly Bruce Wayne on The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover story.

While many other actors have donned the Batsuit, from Adam West to Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and of course, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson, many regard Conroy as the definitive voice of Batman.

DC Comics, Mark Hamill, and More Pay Tribute to Batman Voice Actor

Kevin Conroy has left his mark on the comic book industry and DC posted a tribute to him on Twitter:

The man who also made a name for himself in the voice acting industry alongside Conroy in Batman: The Animated Series is Mark Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movies, as well as the voice of the Joker. He also posted a tribute to Conroy:
