Republicans Retake House Control With Narrow Majority Win in Midterm Elections
Republicans narrowly got the majority win of the U.S. House on Wednesday, now giving the party the leverage to curb U.S. President Joe Biden's agenda.
The GOP secured the 218th seat needed to retake the control of the House from the Democrats. It reached the much-needed number of seats after the election in California's 27th District was called for Republican Mike Garcia. Garcia had been leading the county by double-digit percentage points, as reported by Washington Times.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy issued a statement celebrating the news that Republicans and analysts had been forecasting for days. McCarthy tweeted "it's official." He also tweeted that "Republicans have flipped the People's House." He served as minority leader for four years and is now seen to be the next House speaker now that the Republicans reclaimed the House majority.
The president has congratulated McCarthy. Biden noted that he is prepared to work "with House Republicans to deliver results for working families."
The president issued a statement saying that the midterm elections "demonstrated the strength and resilience of American democracy." Biden said in his statement that "the will of the people prevails," adding that the future is "too promising to be trapped in political warfare."
Republicans Taking Back House Control
The GOP will be controlling key committees, having the ability to shape legislation and launch investigations on Biden, the president's family, and his administration. Currently, there is interest regarding the president's son Hunter Biden and his business dealings.
Some Republican lawmakers have raised the possibility of impeaching Biden. However, it would be difficult for the party to do so with a slim majority in the House.
House Oversight and Reform Committee Republicans said in a press conference that they will have an update regarding the investigation into the Biden family's influence on possible "peddling to enrich themselves."
A retiring Republican centrist, Fred Upton, said that the narrow win makes controlling the House hard, especially when it comes to producing results."
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green promised that the Republican leaders would probe Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Justice Department regarding the treatment of defendants jailed in connection to the January 6 attack.
Meanwhile, Sen. Chuck Schumer has invited Republicans to try to work with Democrats on legislative initiatives. Schumer will remain as majority leader.
U.S. Midterm Election
Republicans may use their majority to push a counter-narrative regarding the January 6 Capitol attack in an effort to shift blame away from former U.S. President Donald Trump.
McCarthy also outlines his plans, including tackling inflation, rising crime, and border security. He also hinted at possible eventual impeachment proceedings, which some of his members have already started to call for.
McCarthy also vowed to strip power from Democrats, promising to remove Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar from his committee. Omar is currently on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Other lawmakers that McCarthy plans to get off from their current position are California Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff, according to a source. Swalwell and Schiff are members of the House Intelligence Committee.
