Sinaloa Cartel Boss El Chapo's Brother, El Guano, Continues to Evade Arrest but 5 of His Bodyguards Were Captured
Aureliano Guzman Loera, alias "El Guano," brother of Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, remains one of the most elusive criminals in the world.
El Guano is a Sinaloa Cartel leader in his own right. Police and military soldiers in Mexico seemed to have a chance to arrest him recently but failed.
According to Borderland Beat, authorities received a tip through a phone call about a possible cartel activity happening near La Guasima town in the municipality of Culiacan in Sinaloa state on November 11.
Law enforcement officers followed up on the tip and surveilled the area. While driving along a dirt road between La Guasima and Mojolo, they spotted several men standing outside a house.
Authorities then approached the men, who were carrying firearms. However, the men noticed them, so they tried to flee. Authorities chased the men and quickly caught up with them.
They arrested five men and identified them as Luis Angel "N", Jorge "N", Luis Fernando "N", Jorge "N", and Ricardo "N". No other information was given. Five long-barrel firearms - three of them had grenade launchers - and two more handguns, and ammo, were seized from the men.
Authorities also confiscated various tactical vests, some with fake Marines patches, from the suspects. The five men were reportedly the bodyguards of El Guano, who maintains control of much of the Sinaloan mountainous area in Badiraguato municipality after El Chapo was turned over to American officials.
Rewards on the Sinaloa Cartel Boss El Chapo's Brother El Guano
In November last year, the U.S. Attorney's office in Arizona unsealed two indictments that charged some high-ranking members of the Sinaloa cartel, including El Chapo's brother.
In a press release, the U.S. Attorney's office said: "The indictments allege various violations of United States law related to the international distribution of controlled substances, including fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana, occurring over several years."
After a few days, the U.S. State Department announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of El Guano, who is reportedly three years older than El Chapo.
El Guano maintained a much lower profile working below his younger sibling in the Sinaloa Cartel. He started to take a more prominent role in the Sinaloa Cartel after El Chapo's arrest.
El Chapo's Younger Brother Killed in Prison
Arturo Guzman Loera, alias "El Pollo," was reportedly serving a prison sentence when he was brutally murdered in 2004 by another "powerful criminal."
According to Mundo Now, El Pollo was El Chapo's younger brother, who took care of the Sinaloa Cartel boss' children after his arrest in 1993 on the border of Guatemala. El Pollo reportedly became one of El Chapo's closest advisers after the Mexican drug lord's first escape in 2001.
But a few months later, the younger Guzman was arrested in a drug trafficking operation in Mexico City. He was then charged with the production, promotion, trafficking and extraction of cocaine and amphetamines from Mexico to the U.S.
El Chapo's younger brother was also accused of creating a 60-meter narco tunnel for drug smuggling on the border between Tijuana and San Ysidro. El Pollo was then detained in the La Palma maximum security prison.
On the night of December 31, 2004, El Pollo was shot seven times inside the detention facility. The Attorney General's Office of Mexico said the body of El Chapo's brother was found in the parlor room, with gunshot wounds in the chest and abdomen.
Officials said the one responsible for his El Pollo's murder was José Ramírez Villanueva, who was in the same prison since 2002. The death of El Chapo's brother prompted an investigation to determine how the gun was brought into the facility.
