Chris Hemsworth has opted to take a break from acting after discovering he has a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease.

While filming the fifth episode of his Disney+ series "Limitless," the "Thor" actor learned that he has a genetic predisposition for the disorder that slowly erodes memory and other vital mental capacities.

Hemsworth's odds of developing the neurodegenerative disease are eight to ten times higher than average because he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene, which have been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.

In a Vanity Fair article published on Thursday, Chris Hemsworth said he plans to take some time off work once his press tour for the documentary series wraps up.

The 39-year-old actor noted that he wants to spend more time with his family in light of the news. He said his grandpa is currently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

"I'm not sure he actually remembers much anymore, and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language," Hemsworth said. "He'll be talking [in] Dutch and English and then a mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well."

Chris Hemsworth Finds He's at Risk of Developing Alzheimer's Disease

Chris Hemsworth met with a doctor in the fifth episode of the "Limitless" series, and he was informed off-camera by Dr. Peter Attia that he has a genetic predisposition for Alzheimer's disease.

According to Men's Health, Hemsworth underwent genetic testing to see if he might be genetically predisposed to any medical conditions as part of the show's experiments in human longevity. The actor then discovered some information that might have a long-term impact on his life.

Hemsworth said he hoped people would watch "Limitless" and be inspired to proactively take care of themselves better, whether it entails making lifestyle adjustments or getting similar genetic tests.

For the first time since he began portraying Thor in the MCU more than 10 years ago, he noted that he would be taking a break from his work.

It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off... And since we finished the show, I've been completing the things I was already contracted to do," he said. 

"Now when I finish this tour this week, I'm going home, and I'm going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify... be with the kids, be with my wife," he added.

Chris Hemsworth Takes Preventative Steps to Lower the Risk of Alzheimer's Disease

Chris Hemsworth said there was also a benefit in learning that he was at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. He noted that he can now take real "preventative steps" to lessen the likelihood of eventually getting it by paying closer attention to his sleep, fitness, nutrition, and stress levels.

"For me, the positive of it was like, 'Right, if I didn't know this [Alzheimer's] information, I wouldn't have made the changes I made,'" the actor said. 

He added that he is thankful for learning about his condition and is now prepared to minimize the potential that he will one day develop the disease, Deadline reported.

"Limitless," a new documentary series from Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky, is now streaming on Disney+.
