Stimulus Checks the Government May Still Owe You
According to The Sun, the U.S. federal government issued three rounds of stimulus checks during the pandemic. The first one was released in April 2020 and was worth $1,200, and the second one, worth $600, was released in December of that same year.
The third stimulus checks, worth $1,400, were issued in March 2021, and given to those who filed a 2020 tax return that met specific income restrictions. This was reportedly done by filing taxes and claiming the Recovery Rebate credit.
The enhanced child tax credit provided families up to $3,600 per child, or up to $1,800 per kid if they received monthly payments last year. Specifically, parents of children under age 6 get the biggest child tax credit, which is $3,600, and those with children with ages 6 to 17 receive a child tax credit worth $3,000 per child.
Almost half of those money were paid in advance through monthly and child tax credit payments, and to claim the remaining or total amount if a family did not receive advance payments, they need to file a federal 2021 income tax return, CNBC reported.
This earned income tax credit applies to low- and middle-income workers. It was also enhanced for that tax year. As for those without children, they may still be able to receive tax credits.
CNBC reported that "workers with no children may qualify for up to $1,502, which increases to as much as $6,728 for filers with three or more children." As the eligibility for tax credits was expanded, more workers are now qualified for the 2021 tax year.
It was reported that the IRS sent letters to over 9 million American families in October that have yet to file their federal tax returns. The agency reminded these families that they may still qualify for these tax credits whether they have children or none.
South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Illinois Issuing Tax Refunds
CNET reported that millions of people in South Carolina received a one-time income tax rebate of up to $800 last month. The state's Department of Revenue sent out printed checks, debit cards, and direct deposits, and they will come through until the end of the year.
The same is also happening in Illinois, as the state is still issuing $50 and $100 income tax rebates. Meanwhile, the state of Massachusetts has also started refunding $3 billion in surplus tax revenue to its residents.
