"Chrisley Knows Best" Stars Todd and Julie Chrisley, Guilty of Bank Fraud and Tax Evasion
Five months after being charged with federal fraud and concealing their wealth from tax officials, "Chrisley Knows Best" stars Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley were given lengthy prison sentences on Monday.
The U.S. Attorney's Office states that both Julie and Todd were given prison terms of 12 and 7 years, respectively, according to NBC News.
In June, a federal jury in Atlanta convicted the couple guilty of fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. They were accused of plotting for years to make up more than $30 million in fake loans to scam banks in the Atlanta area.
Their accountant was also convicted of tax fraud for filing false company tax returns on their behalf, and Julie Chrisley was found guilty of wire fraud and obstructing justice.
The pair was accused of using false documentation to secure bank loans and to hide their income from the IRS through a production firm, all while showing off their lavish lifestyle on television.
The prosecution claims that despite making millions of dollars from their show and other entertainment activities, the Chrisleys failed to pay Todd's 2009 back taxes and filed their tax returns late from 2013 through 2016.
The prosecution recommends 17.5 to nearly 22 years for Todd Chrisley and 10 to 12.5 years for Julie Chrisley.
The Defense Attorney for Chrisley Asked for a Sentence Reduction
The prosecution requested a lesser sentence, and Todd Chrisley's legal team responded.
His mother and those who "are employed in the production and filming of the Chrisley television shows" will be affected "severely and negatively" by his incarnation, Todd's defense team argued.
In support of a lenient punishment, the couple's family and friends testified as character witnesses.
Court papers acquired by PEOPLE in August show that the two filed a combined motion for a new trial through their attorneys in the Atlanta Division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The motion claimed that "the government presented and failed to correct false testimony from IRS Revenue Officer Betty Carter, who lied about the Chrisleys owing taxes or years when she knew no taxes were due."
"This testimony had the effect of falsely painting the Chrisleys as untruthful, likely to commit other forms of fraud, and evading the tax payments alleged in the indictment," the motion stated.
Bruce H. Morris, Todd's attorney, charged Mark Braddock, the couple's former employee, of impersonating Todd and carrying out the fraud behind the couple's backs. Braddock allegedly turned against the pair when he was fired in 2012.
After severing ties with Braddock, Assistant U.S. Attorney Annalise Peters noted that the pair continued their fraudulent activities.
"Chrisley Knows Best" Star Grayson Chrisley Was Hurt in a Car Crash Before Parents' Sentencing
Grayson Chrisley was brought to the hospital after a car accident last weekend left him hurt.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department told PEOPLE that on Saturday, the 16-year-old son of Todd and Julie Chrisley, slammed into the back of a stopped car in Nashville, Tennessee.
It is possible that Grayson Chrisley sustained a brain injury in the accident, as he has no recollection of the aftermath.
The actor from "Chrisley Knows Best" needed medical attention for his injuries, so he was sent to the hospital in an ambulance.
In his podcast, Chrisley Confessions, Todd explained the situation in greater detail.
"Grayson was in a horrific car accident on the interstate, and we got the phone call that we had to get to him," he shared in the Nov. 17 episode. "I ran out of the house, you know, jumped in the car, and found him on the interstate."
Todd, 53, continued, "The highway patrol was there. Traffic was lined up for miles and miles. His car was totaled."
