Republican leader Kevin McCarthy called on Homeland Security Chief Alejandro Mayorkas' resignation amid the ongoing border issues, claiming that the Homeland Security leader failed to secure the southern border.

McCarthy warned that if Mayorkas does not file his resignation, House Republicans will open a probe against him and his department to see whether they should launch impeachment proceedings.

McCarthy cited recent suicides of Border Patrol agents; the U.S. President Joe Biden administration's decision to rescind the "Remain in Mexico" policy; and the current administration's efforts to end Title 42.

Title 42 is a policy by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which allowed authorities to limit asylum-seekers from crossing the border.

McCarthy said that Mayorkas "cannot and must not remain in that position."

Conservatives who are not yet waving support are pushing for the House Republicans to impeach Mayorkas when they take power next year.

White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a tweet that McCarthy went to the border and "staged a political stunt devoid of any solutions."

Sams said that McCarthy threatened to impeach Mayorkas in April. He added that the Republican leader is "literally dusting off old news," instead of learning from the "historic midterm underperformance" of Republicans.

Calls for Resignation of Homeland Security Chief Alejandro Mayorkas

Homeland Security spokesperson Marsha Espinosa responded to McCarthy's remarks. She said that Mayorkas has "no plans to resign."

Espinosa added in a statement that Mayorkas "is proud to advance the noble mission" of the department while supporting the workforce and serving the American people.

Espinosa went on to say that members of Congress "can do better than point the finger at someone else."

Mayorkas has become the recent target of Republicans, with one Republican congressman comparing Mayorkas to Benedict Arnold, who is an infamous American military officer who defected to the British side during the Revolutionary War.

Republican lawmakers have accused Mayorkas and other Biden administration officials of causing the influx of illegal border crossings by revoking Trump-era policies.

Border Issues

There were more than 200,000 apprehensions of migrants at the border in October, which was the highest number for any October on record.

Art Arthur of the Center for Immigration Studies noted that the number was higher than the total for all of Octobers between the years 2016 and 2020.

Meanwhile, another 64,000 migrants were not apprehended and got away in October.

Overall, more than 2.2. a million migrants were caught by authorities in the fiscal year 2022.

It was earlier projected that once the Title 42 ruling is totally lifted, up to 18,000 migrants a day could start arriving at the border.

As of now, the Biden administration is still using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Title 42 order to exclude migrants from the United States.

Meanwhile, National Guard will soon deploy 10 M113 armored personnel carrier vehicles to the border in Texas, with around 50 soldiers will be trained to operate the vehicles.

State officials will then identify 10 positions to station them along the border.
