Former Dallas Mavericks and Memphis Grizzlies guard Tyrell Terry has suddenly retired from the NBA at age 22. Tyrell was born in Valley City, North Dakota, on September 28, 2000. When he was five, he moved to Minneapolis with his mother, Carrie Grise. 

Grise, a single parent, was a physical therapist who spent 12 years working in outpatient sports medicine. She currently provides home care for elderly people.

Like his father, Tyrell Terry became a basketball player at an early age. His father, Tyron Terry, played for Valley City State University for two seasons and spent two years each at North Dakota State University, where he was an all-conference performer.

While walking in a shopping mall, his mother saw her college friend, Larry Suggs. Suggs, a college basketball player, volunteered to teach Tyrell how to play the game after Carrie asked him if he knew of a basketball league that her son could join. And this introduced and exposed Tyrell to the world of basketball.

According to PlayersBio, Tyrell then dreamt of becoming an NBA player. However, he thought that dream was unattainable due to his skepticism. 

Tyrell then became a member of the DeLaSalle High School basketball team. He helped his school win the Class 3A state championship and become the first team in Minnesota to win five straight championships.

In his senior season, Tyrell was honored with Minnesota's Mr. Basketball title in 2019 for his stellar performance. He then played colligate basketball for Stanford Cardinals.

In January 2020, Tyrell was named Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week for outstanding performance. He was also selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and All-Pac-12 honorable mention. His sparkling freshman season for Stanford Cardinals men's basketball sent him shooting up to draft boards.

Tyrell Terry NBA Career

The Dallas Mavericks drafted Tyrell Terry in 2020. The Mavericks selected him as the 31st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Throughout his 31-game NBA career, he averaged 14.6 points and shot over 40% from the three-point range, according to FanNation.

Unfortunately, his professional career got off to a slow start, and after playing in just 11 games for the Mavericks, he was waived in preparation for the upcoming 2021-22 season. Last year, he was with the Memphis Grizzlies for two games before being waived during the offseason.

Tyrell Terry Retirement

Tyrell Terry announced his retirement on Instagram on Thursday and talked about his struggles with mental health.

According to Bleacher Report, Tyrell explained that while basketball gave him lifelong friends, amazing accomplishments, and unforgettable memories, it also let him experience the "darkest times" of his life, "to the point where instead of building me up, it began to destroy me." 

He also claimed that basketball had stopped helping him and instead started harming him.

"I began to despise and question the value of myself, much more than those surrounding me could ever see or know," he said.

Tyrell cited unpleasant symptoms, such as "intrusive thoughts, waking up nauseous, and finding myself struggling to take normal breaths because of the rock that would sit on my chest that seemed to weigh more than I could carry."

Tyrell Terry thanked those who supported him and apologized to those he had let down. He concluded his statement by saying: "I'm headed down a different path now, one that will hopefully lead to happiness and being able to love myself again."
