Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva Eyeing Stronger Partnership With Russia's Vladimir Putin
Brazil's president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday that Russia's Vladimir Putin had congratulated him on his recent victory.
Lula noted that he and the Russian president discussed having a talk about having stronger relations between the two countries.
Putin earlier said that he had "good relations" with both Lula and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro made an official trip to Moscow in February days before Russia started its invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Lula noted that Brazil is "back" on the world stage after he won the presidential elections in the country in October.
He also tweeted that Brazil is seeking dialogue with everyone and is committed to the search for a world without hunger and with peace.
Russia also released a statement noting that the two leaders are confident that the two countries will create a "strategic partnership"
The BRICS group of emerging communities have Brazil and Russia as its members. China, India, and South Africa are also part of the group.
Brazil and Russia Partnership
Lula said in early September that he plans to talk with Russia and Ukraine about ending the conflict once he wins the election in Brazil.
The president-elect also noted that he will talk with Russia and tell them that "war is of no interest to anyone," and it only benefits arms sellers.
He also said during an event at the State University of Rio de Janeiro in April that Brazil would be a better negotiator, adding that peace could be reached at a bar table.
Meanwhile, Bolsonaro has announced that Brazil is in solidarity with Russia. He added that Brazil and Russia are in collaboration on several areas such as defense, oil, gas, and agriculture,
Bolsonaro and Putin had a phone conversation in June to discuss energy and the shipment of Russian fertilizers to Brazil.
The Brazilian president also openly criticized the sanctions imposed against Russia in June.
Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
U.S. President Joe Biden recently announced an additional $1.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's anticipated visit to the White House.
The new assistance is on top of the $20 billion U.S. security assistance given to Ukraine since the start of Russia's invasion of the country.
Ukraine has also been urging the U.S. to send the advanced air defense system Patriot.
Meanwhile, Putin issued instructions for the creation of a so-called working group that would coordinate authorities' issues related to mobilization preparation and mobilization.
Last week, Putin visited the headquarters of a "special military operation," according to a Russian state media report.
It was not detailed where the so-called "headquarters" was located.
Putin familiarized himself with the work of the headquarters during the visit. He also received a report on the progress of the operation, held a conference, and listened to military leaders' proposals about the immediate and medium-term movements of the military.
Zelensky also visited the front lines in Bakhmut in Ukraine.
